a quick visit to the medical team had confirmed that I had broken no bones, and was only in need of some rest.

I sighed loudly from Kuren's bloated couch, sinking down into the cushions to very obviously express my discontent.

he glared at me over his phone from the opposing sofa, daring me to complain.

'I wanna go back out to the protest...' I started, doing my best to be convincingly assertive.

Ren shook his head and gestured to my wrapped foot that was currently resting on the coffee table.

'the medics told you to rest for at least 24 hours, and you know that.' he scolded, irritated by my relentless antics.

'but its already-' I glanced at my screen, '7:56!!' a frown stretched across my face, mourning the lost opportunities that came with the cover of darkness.

he didnt even bother to reply, shifting his attention right back to whatever he was doing on his phone.

with no other choice, I pulled my own out, eager to escape the confines of Kuren's rather large urban apartment.

recalling the person from the earlier protest that had me awestruck, I opened twitter to gather any kind of information.

the trending page was a surefire way to get quick sources, and so I looked there first.

the number one trending spot belonged to... athena? nothing really out of the ordinary. a couple spots down and my eyes caught on the tag 'specopsgirl'.

a quick click took me to the exact information I had been seeking, as well as hundreds of fan edits with trendy music in the background.

within minutes I learned that the person had been a girl (absolutely no complaints there), and that she was most commonly referred to as Athena.

intently, I watched every fan edit that I came across, taking in the sheer power and confidence behind her every movement.

the sparkles and pinkish filters did little to detract from her intimidating physique, leaving no room for opposition.

I scrolled through endless thirst tweets from every gender, scowling slightly at my unfortunate competition.

I cast my phone aside with a sigh, glaring at the ceiling before closing my eyes and falling asleep to the sound of the background TV.

~^~

a while later my eyes flickered open, unsure as to what had awoken me.

the apartment was now dark, Kuren was gone and a thick blanket draped over me.

the clock on the mantle read '2.14 am'.

I shivered slightly at the cold atmosphere, wondering if a window was open somewhere.

I got up slowly and stretched, testing my weight on my still bandaged ankle with little pain.

padding around his apartment, I looked for any open windows, eventually getting to Kuren's large room.

i smiled to myself, seeing his lanky form haphazardly spread across his queen sized bed, a couple pillows having been knocked to the floor.

his steady breathing rumbled through the quiet atmosphere, offering a peaceful tone.

no matter how much we bickered, he was the only family I had ever had, and the only friend too.

I cared deeply for him, even though that was sometimes expressed in odd ways on both of our ends.

blinking, I realized that I had now been presented with an opportunity.

doing a quick 180, I rushed to grab my gear, ready to once again hit the streets and protest.

a smirk graced my lips as I slid the door to Kuren's apartment shut, my backpack slung over my left shoulder.

'sorry, ren.'
