Hell broke loose long ago. People lost their way before anything bad happened. The outbreak of the infection caused mass panic without even creating much chaos.
People are judgmental, soft, and weak. Of course, there are many that I would gladly call my brothers or sisters in arms til the end of the world. The apocalypse of any type will be the answer when there is too much comfort.
Zombies are just a reflection of human nature. It has a wanting desire to get what it wants without caring about the destruction it causes. There is already so much bloodshed throughout history as that will never stop. Let the undead rise and try to take back the world that many forces have already tried before. They will lose, even if it takes many years. The good souls that breathe and live throughout our civilization will thrive.
Power is just an illusion. Everyone in the apocalypse is on the same playing field, so try surviving on your own when you've been protected your entire life.
Your first guess is right, you will perish with the rest of them. Learn, Train, Revolt.
