🍂🍃FIVE no man's land
THE MOOD WAS SOMBER FOR ALMA AS THE SIGHT OF HER PALACE, WHICH STOOD WHERE IDRIS AND PEMBRALL MET, CAME IN VIEW. She allowed a smile to grace her lips when some of her people grinned, calling her name and greeting her.
"How are you?" She asks an elderly couple, Clarke and Paula. "Everything serving well? No problems at all, any concerns?"
"We're doing great, thank you, Your Grace," Paula spoke, grinning so hard she looked like she might cry out of happiness. Children ran up to her, giving her and Elspeth flowers. Alma knew it was the fact that she literally officiated some of the weddings here that the local pastors would never allow.
"The plantations are prospering," Clarke informed her proudly. "We will never have to suffer starvation again."
"I would never let any of you suffer through starvation again, that I can promise you," Alma smiled softly, before seeing Evan approach with a relieved smile.
"Your Majesty," Evan gently bowed to her.
Alma tried not to roll her eyes as she chuckles, "Evan, you are my brother. You don't have to bow to me."
"You are my Queen just as much as you're my sister," He shot back, grinning at Elspeth and offered them his arms. Elspeth snorted, refusing him as Alma took one of his arms, and began leading them to the castle. "I arranged a meeting with the council as you requested."
"Have there been any more disturbances? Insubordinations?"
"They are angry with the dismissal of Lord Clermont," He informed her as Elspeth patted their shoulders and told them she'll see them later. "They think being unmarried has driven you insane."
"My only regret is that I was blinded by the fact that they were our father's closest constituents, and will listen only to him."
"At least you've realized now," Evan says lightly, patting her arm. "That's the most important. You are the Queen and the Empress of twenty years now, whatever the outcome of this meeting is, do not let them bully you into something you're not."
The men all jumped to their feet at her entrance, and Evan was right. They were angry, but what the hell have they got to be angry for? It was their insubordination that got most men and a child killed. She should be angry.
