(This chapter talks about miscarriage. It might be triggering for some readers.)

"What is up with you today?" Taking my eyes off the truck's window, I looked over to see who nudged my foot. "You have been awfully quiet throughout the whole shift today," added Eddie.
I could feel everyone's eyes on me, including Ian, who sat a seat across from me in the firetruck as I mumbled, "Nothing."
I have been dreading this day since I agreed with uncle Bobby to come back to work. All I kept repeating myself since I woke up this morning was that it was going to be one hell of a day having Ian tagging along with us, but to my surprise, he has kept his distance throughout the calls and even at the firehouse. Even with the lack of approach, I noticed how he kept shooting looks at me whenever he thought I was not looking, but never dared talk to me unless it was work-related.
I was starting to believe it was because my uncle was around, which I was grateful for. Another reason I was sure Ian did not dare to talk to me was that Buck has been protective of me today. He would not leave me alone whenever Ian was around. After my little drunk stunt a few nights ago, he was slightly aware of the situation between Ian and me but did not know the full details, and I was not planning on sharing them anytime soon.
"So, Eddie, how are things with Chris?" Buck asked, trying to change the subject.
"Fine?" Eddie answered, giving Evan a weird look. "We were at your place last night."
"You have a kid?" Ian inquired.
I smiled at Buck, knowing full well that he was trying to change the subject away from me. "Thanks," I mouthed, earning a wink from him, which made my heart turn into goo, making me feel quite pathetic.
"Yeah, he is nine and quite frankly my world." Eddie smiled proudly, pulling his phone out, showing a picture of Chris.
Christopher is still young, but he is fortunate to have a father like Eddie. They have been through a lot yet still hold their heads up high and keep going forward no matter what crosses their paths. I admire Eddie for doing the best for his wonderful kid, which, unfortunately, not many children can say that.
With the corner of my eye, I noticed how Ian kept looking between Buck and me. Part of me wanted to snap at him but decided to bite my tongue for the sake of everyone in this truck.
"How about you, Evan? Any kids or special someone?" Ian questioned with what sounded like a hint of jealousy. I rolled my eyes at him and looked out the window once again. I was ready to get to the scene where there was a pregnant lady with apparent cramps and vaginal bleeding so I could get out of this truck. Next time I would volunteer to drive the ambulance before Hen or Chimney do.
