Slamming the door with harsh thud, Valora jumped in her seat. Someone was being despicable, angry... and was that hurt?
From her car seat window, she looked at the inn in front of her. It was an old fashioned two floor solid well kept structure. The ivy-covered curling down the walls into the cut hedges surrounding the inn and pretty long trees at it's edges hiding its vastness.
With visible, prominent, sloping roofs with curved edges that wrap around gables and rakes and prominent windows, the house was almost taken out of children's story book.
Valora saw Phoenix walk inside. He had told her briskly to stay put. For the first time, she listened. Two reasons.
She might be seen by some outsider and risk getting caught. Not that Phoenix cared but she did. Yet the inn was structured in a place way into a deserted area. The only thing not showing signs that it was haunted were the five cars parked out in front.
Second, she somehow felt the lasting regret of her comment to Phoenix.
He had kissed her! So hotly and roughly. Taking his pleasure and demanding hers. The coaxing of their tongues had been quixotic.
Yet, it was the end of that high when she blurted out her fear. The remainder of their drive to here, wherever here was, had been colder than the nights at the North Pole. He had purposely detached himself away from her.
Because of her accidental comment?
This was the problem. She needed to protect herself. Long were gone the days where they needed a man for everything. Just because there was an instant connection, it doesn't necessarily add up to the fact there would be no hurting.
Who was it that said the aim of the wise is not to secure pleasure, but to avoid pain? Ahh....Aristotle.
She used to read books every now and then. It wasn't her go-to but it was always something to think about that she wasn't alone in her suffering.
Well, her time for pain had been coming since she got sent to this earth. Is it too much to ask to have just one week of pure unadulterated pleasure and happiness. Content? What's that like?
Those fleeting moments with Phoenix. That's the non-lasting effect of contentment.
When she saw him returning, her stomach churned. So.. majestic. The way he walked signed a strong protective guard. Ready to defend the innocent and protect what was his.
She may not need Phoenix's protection but sure would liked to call his. Like he did earlier.
His venom. She hadn't over looked that heart wrenching pronoun. What would it be like to be actually his?
He would be possessive, no doubt. The giddiness of kissing her anytime she wanted. Anytime he wanted. Maybe there was a reason of those idealistic history of men who provide and take care of their women. It was this.
It was so...runic. The feeling was mysterious to her and undoubtedly comforting.
But the dream was far away. So far she could only look at it and never live it.
Opening the door, he got in. Valora had to keep reminding herself how big he was. Taking in the space with the wide expanse of his shoulders and muscles. She felt tiny.
When he turned to her, it held her eyes fiercely. "Take your bags. We are going in."
Her eyes widen. "Excuse me? Have you seem to forgotten I'm on the runaway highway? I can't go in there."
"Don't remind me of my past mistake, which will be rectified but since-" He closed his eyes.
What was happening here? Looking for the right word? Then he flashed them open. He continued. "-you wanted freedom. I'm giving you a week of it in there." Pointing to the inn.
