The next few days passed in a feeling of bliss, Benny and I were unofficially officially together. I had never been happier. I felt as though I could finally express myself, I felt free.
I sat down on the grass with Benny, preparing to spend the afternoon together.
"I can't stay for the evening. I have a stupid funeral to go to." I started. Benny purses his lips slightly frowning.
"I'm sorry for your loss." He said staring ahead.
"It's no big deal, I don't know why we have to bother... my family isn't even really religious."
"Having a funeral is for the best." He said staring into oblivion.
"Everybody just cries, and then eats."
"In life you need to focus on the little things... the small traditions, and seconds of peace.... because they help to guide you through the big things. That's really the point of religion, I think. It gives you guidance and assurance. It helps you to not take on too much at once." Benny said looking straight into my eyes.
"I still don't see religion doing any good." I said laying back in the grass to look at the clouds. Benny laud back with me.
"When I sit in church I feel like I can take things slow for a minute... like nothing around me matters. I feel.... it feels... like everything is just going to be okay." I didn't need to look at Benny to know he had a small frown as he spoke. "When I'm gone..." he started.
"Don't talk like that. Let's just think about us.. right now." I said sitting up in my arm to look at him. He frowned deeper, so I leaned over and kissed it away. Life with Benny was so simple. As much as I hated his philosophical stories, the advice he gave me was precious, and I always needed it.
"I have a question." I said light heartedly.
"Shoot."
"Even when I wasn't being my best self around you," I grimaced remembering all my bad choices. "You were still so nice to me... why?"
"Jay..." Benny smiled "that's easy. I knew there was good in you. I never give up... and I'm rarely wrong." He chuckled. "I just knew you needed someone to help you see the good in yourself, and stop you from comparing yourself to others... Jay you're an amazing person, but you get so hung up on what everybody else is doing..."
"I'll work on it." I said smiling at him. The clouds drifted lazily across the spring morning sky. The forget me nots bloomed all over the hills, speckling it. All I could think was how the blue brought out Benny's eyes.
"I love you." I whispered in his ear.
"I love you too."
"I'll walk you home." I said smiling and helping him up. Today had been perfect. Just like every day with Benny has been, and would be forever.
