Hermione woke up to find Malfoy cradling her injured arm with a sad look. When he found that she regained consciousness, he put her arm down and held her temple gently. Worry clouding his grey eyes.

'How could you do this to me?' His eyes were red. With tears?

... To him?

A hand clutched Malfoy's shoulder tightly.

'Get a grip, Draco.'

The hand belonged to Blaise Zabini.

Malfoy nodded and remained silent for a while before asking her how she was feeling.

Like shit. Why won't you just let me die?
'Do you really want to know?' her tone dripping venom.

Malfoy looked hurt for a moment, then his cold expression returned before quickly leaving the cell, leaving her with Zabini.

'He's not trying to hurt you, you know.'

Hermione snorted.

'He's trying to protect you and he's getting into trouble for it. You should be grateful. '

'ROTECT ME?! HE NEARLY ATE ME! HE KEEPS ME ALIVE BECAUSE HE WANTS TO INVADE MY MIND! HE HATES ME AND MY KIND!'

Zabini looked furious. He retorted in a dangerously low voice. 'Think, Granger. He didn't once use Legilimency on you. He makes sure that no one enters your cell but himself. He makes sure that you get food and water. He controlled his werewolf self to protect you from himself and we both now that's nearly impossible. Draco's protection is becoming obvious and it's drawing unwanted attention!'

Protect her?

She hated to admit it, but he made sense. Before the werewolf incident, death eaters used to try to invade her mind then beat her and insulted her with things worse than 'mudblood'. They even used crucio on her and stopped when someone reminded them that Voldemort needed her sane. They gave her disgusting leftovers and unclean water. She was kept in an utterly disgusting cell with rats for company. But since Malfoy came, she was kept in a cleaner cell and was given proper food and water. He rescued her from death, or worse, two times. Even the death eaters didn't bother her anymore.

'Why is he doing this? I'm the mudblood, remember?'

Zabini smiled weakly.
'That will be Draco's to answer. Now do yourself a favor and stop hurting yourself. If you lose Draco's protection, which is going to happen soon given you stupid Gryffindor actions, you'll be on your own. You will be tortured to death and you will start the Order's end.' She gasped. He was right.

Zabini left.

Alone with her thoughts, Hermione realized how stupid she had been. Why was he protecting her? Was he a double agent, like Snape? No. That's too far fetched. Draco was an egoistic pureblood. He hated her and her friends. He always made sure that their lives were hell. He was the first to call her a mudblood.

But then why help her? Why protect mudblood Granger?

There was certainly something changed about him. Whenever looked at her, she didn't find his famous sneer. Rather, he looked concerned about her for some reason. His expression didn't convey that old hatred anymore. Has he changed?
No. Don't get your hopes up.

There wasn't a werewolf in history who could control his or herself during the full moon. There must be an incredibly strong incentive that made him control his werewolf self. And he must have become an incredibly strong wizard to be the first to do such a thing.

Almost a month passed without seeing him. She stopped her suicide missions and started to pay attention to her nutrition. No death eaters bothered her. Good food, clean water and even clean clothes were supplied. She was grateful. For now. Hermione continued occluding for she couldn't depend only on Malfoy's protection. She still didn't know what were his incentives and surely, they weren't anywhere near noble. Right?

She knew the full moon was nearing again and hoped he wouldn't come back.

She was occluding when she heard his footsteps. He came back. It was the full moon again...

He remained silent for a while, and she waited in anticipation. Her heart beating so loud. Minutes passed in silence, but they felt like hours.
He finally looked her in the eye.

'We need to talk. We don't have much time.'
