Rich's POV
I felt absolutely horrible for what Jake did to Michael. You could really see the hurt in his big brown eyes when Jake called him those names and the little sobs he let out when Jake kicked him. I knew he didn't deserve any of that but yet I didn't do anything to stop it... I didn't understand why I felt so horrible all of a sudden, I mean, I'd always felt kind of guilty but why was I feeling like this?
Why did I suddenly notice those little things? Like how his eyes lit up whenever he saw Jeremy, or how he would just let his hair fall messily onto his face whenever he concentrated or how he would kind of stick his tongue out whenever he really laughed... I decided that I didn't want to be a reason that Michael got hurt anymore.
I have to apologise.
I went looking for Michael but I found his backpack instead. He must've forgotten it when we left...
I decided to give it to him once I found him and use that as an excuse to talk to him.
I found him sitting in the cafeteria with Jeremy and Christine. It looked like one of them said something funny because they all started laughing. I could hear Michael's laugh from all the way across and it made me smile a bit. I walked over to them and their laughter died down instantly. Michael looked a mixture between scared, bothered, and curious, probably wondering what I wanted, whilest the other two just gave me cold death stares.
"Yo Michael... Can I talk to you alone for a second?" I asked kinda awkwardly.
"What do you want Rich? What is it that you can say to Michael that you can't say to us?" Jeremy barked at me. Woah, no stutter... What happened there?
"It's okay Jer! Alright sure... 2 minutes..." Michael told me and we left the cafeteria.
I handed him his backpack, which he took very hesitantly.
"I'm not going to hurt you..." I told him reassuringly, which made him ease up a bit.
"I wanted to apologise." I told him truthfully.
"For what?" he asked kinda shocked.
"For everything Michael! I feel awful for the way I've treated you and especially for not doing anything about this morning..." I told him, getting a little flustered.
"Oh... Well, it's a little too late to feel sorry know isn't it Rich?" he got a little annoyed, clutching his stomach where Jake had kicked him. My eyes softened when I remembered the sobs and the hurting brown eyes.
"I know I know... But I promise you that I won't participate in anything that Jake does to you anymore." I told him.
"Well thank you but... That won't really stop him."
"But maybe not having me to help him, Jake will eventually get bored and leave you alone?" I suggested.
"Well anyway... It's been two minutes now. Thanks for returning my backpack and everything... I'll see you around I guess..." he shrugged off my last comment, clearly in a hurry to get away from me. Couldn't blame him...
"Oh- alright, yeah I'll see you around!" I walked a bit behind him on my way back into the cafeteria. I could hear Jeremy asking what I wanted and Michael telling him the short version.
At least you tried Rich...
