warning: this chapter is the longest so far and slightly sad. this will be the second to last chapter since this story was never meant to be long. i hope you guys like it!

astrid woke up in the middle of the night to a tapping sound on her window. her eyes were puffy and slightly sore-feeling from crying herself to sleep.

she looked at her phone and tapped it to turn it on. it was almost five thirty am.

the tapping continued so she walked over to the window, only to see topper standing below. astrid opened the window as quietly as she could.

"topper? what are you doing here?" she asked him.

"i'm sneaking you out, come on." he says in a hushed tone.

"i'm on the second floor idiot." she says and he chuckles.

"i know. just climb down." he says and she looks out the window and sees a ladder leaning against her house.

"where the hell did you get a ladder?" astrid asks, confused.

"just hurry up!" he ignores her question. she sighs and throws her leg over the window sill, finding her footing on the first ladder rung.

astrid climbed down as carefully as she could, arms wrapping around her as she reached the bottom.

"hello." topper whispered in her ear as he hugged her to him. she giggled lightly as his fingers touched her bare skin when her shirt lifted up slightly.

"what are we doing?" she asks as he grabs her hand and starts to jog through her yard with her. he simply shushes her, not wanting anyone to be woken up by the teens. they get to his car which was parked at the end of her driveway.

"now can you explain?" she asks once they both get in.

"it's a secret." he teases and starts to drive. astrid brought her knees up, watching out the windshield to see where they were going. topper let go of the wheel with one hand, instead putting his hand on her thigh.

astrid smiles softly, her eyes moving to him while he drives.

"the beach?" she asks and he nods, parking in the grass on a small hill that was overlooking the beach.

"have you been crying?" he asks once he turns to look at her.

"just family problems." she says, giving him a smile to reassure him. he puts his seat back a bit.

"come here." he says and she raises her eyebrow slightly.

"you want me to sit in your lap?" she asks and he nods.

"weirdo." astrid mumbles but climbs over the middle console and sits in his lap. her side was leaning on his chest, her knees pulled up to lay across his lap. topper loosely wrapped his arms around her.

"so we're watching the sunrise?" she asks in a quiet tone. he nods slowly, kissing her forehead.

the two sat in silence, just enjoying each other's comfort for the time until the sun rose.

"thank you." astrid whispered and he tilted his head slightly to look at her.

"for what?" he asked.

"bringing me here. just being with me." she shrugs as she leans her head on his shoulder.

"do you want to stop at kelce's house before going home? his parents aren't home and we could all watch a movie?" topper suggests and astrid shrugged. she honestly didn't care but she didn't want to go home and topper knew his mom would be home so they couldn't go there.
