Hyunjin walked home, her hands in her pocket and her earbuds blasting music. She breathed in the cold winter air.
It was only about 8:30PM when Hyunjin made it home. Immediately, she was greeted with her mother hugging her. The only thing she didn't dislike in the whole world, was her mother.
"I didn't think you'd come home for break," Hyunjin's mom said.
"I'm broke, I have no choice," Hyunjin said, her arms by her side as her mom hugged her.
Her mom laughed as she let Hyunjin go. She walked around her house, it was a big house, her family was unbelievably wealthy. Hyunjin stumbled into her living room, where she saw her dad just sitting on the long white-leather couch. They hadn't seem eachother in a long time, yet she got no greeting.
flash_[back] - TW
A thirteen year old Hyunjin walked up to her parents, her heart pounding out of her chest. She was sure it was a bag idea, but she was tired of hiding.
Her parents, or at least her dad were old fashioned to stay the least. She didn't care enough to know what they did, or didn't approve of, but she was sure they were homophobic.
Hyunjin took a deep breath at the entrance of their kitchen. Walking in, she sat down on her chair, watching her parents eat dinner. She didn't take a bite of the food infront of her.
"Hyunjin? Why aren't you eating?" Hyunjin's mom asked. "What's wrong? You can always tell us?"
".. ..." Hyunjin mumbled, but it wasn't audible.
"Hyunjin, speak up or your gonna live your whole life being a pathetic embarrassment," Hyunjin's dad spoke.
It might sound harsh, but Hyunjin was use to it. She'd been talked down to, to the point she found it to be a sort of routine.
"I'm gay," Hyunjin mumbled, a bit louder.
The room went silent. After a minute, Hyunjin's dad went back to eating his food.
"No you're not," He said. "Don't joke about that, many people suffer from that. They're sick people, you don't want people actually thinking you're one of them."
"I'm not kidding, I'm dead serious," Hyunjin said a bit louder.
He put down his chopsticks, and poured himself a glass of soju. He drank it, and loudly sighed. Without saying another word, he went into his office.
Hyunjin ran her fingers through her hair and out her head down. She didn't know what to think at this point.
She felt her mom squeeze her shoulders.
"It's okay," She assured, and walked into the office.
All that could be heard throughout the house was yelling, arguing between Hyunjin's parents. Just as a weight was lifted off her shoulders, a new one was put on.
The next morning Hyunjin woke up to the sound of talking from unfamiliar voices. Her father and two other people talked inside her room, waiting for her to awake.
"Get dressed," Her dad said.
Immediately, she got up and dressed. Outside, she was instructed to sit on the couch. She sat on the couch, waiting for whoever knows what.
A nun approached her, and sat next to her. She grabbed Hyunjin's hand and started to talk to her. Hyunjin tried to get up and leave, but she was pushed back down by her father.
"You'll be well soon, don't worry this will all pass over," The nun said.
The next thing she knew, she was being dragged out the house, screaming for it too stop. She had no idea where she was going, or what was about to happen.
It was hell. Conversion camp, her own father put her into a conversion camp. She felt like it was suffocating in the camp. She wasn't aloud to talk to any of the girls. No privacy, not even in the bathrooms.
She sat in class, listening to the most ridiculous of lectures. It had been a few months, she was losing her mind as the days went on. She couldn't wrap her head around the fact they were trying to make them straight, so she zoomed off.
A second later, she heard a tap on the table. Looking over, she saw that it was the girl sitting beside her trying to get her attention. She was gesturing to a little note on the desk.
what's your name?
Hyunjin looked up at the girl, she had no idea who she was but she was lonely and desperate for any sort of social interaction. Besides, she was cute.
what's your name?
Kim Hyunjin. You???
Suddenly, Hyunjin felt a sharp pain in her back. Looking up, she saw in of the nuns staring down at her. In a split second, she was pulled up and dragged out the room.
The next thing she could remember, she was in the chapel. She was down on all fours, her lip and nose dripping with blood. She knew what was happening wasn't legal, but she had no say in anything.
"Don't worry, you'll be cured soon," One of the nuns say, rubbing her back.
Even after her long years put in conversion camp, nothing changed. The only thing different was her relationship with her father. Instead of coming to terms with it, he abandoned her. He packed up his bags and left the family.
flashback_[end]
"You, you aren't and will never be my daughter"
Was the last thing he said to Hyunjin. He eventually came back, but never came to terms with his daughter. They were nothing but strangers.
"Greet your daughter," Hyunjin's mom said.
Clearing his throat, he shortly said. "I have no daughter."
It was the was the painfullest sentence Hyunjin had ever heard. Slowly, it began taking jabs at her. But what was she expecting? He cut off all her funds, she had to pay for everything all by herself. Travel, food, school, she payed using her own money.
Back inside her room, she plopped onto her bed, covering her face. It hadn't even been an hour back home, yet she already hated it. It was barely a home for Hyunjin, more so of a punishment.
