True perfection is a bold quest to seek. Only the willing and true of heart will seek the betterment of many.
– Socrates
What does the word perfection really mean? The word perfect is defined as 'having all the required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics; as good as it is possible to be.'
I find it astounding that we use it so differently. 'That lasagna was perfection' Mrs. Sen, our neighbour, commented at our weekly potluck. So that meant it tasted good. It's easy to tell what makes a dish perfect - the right amount of spices, the amount of cooking time to ensure it's just right, the salt and pepper (which absolutely cannot be the only seasoning) and the proportions.
But when your parents don't speak to you for days on end for getting an 'F' on a report card because they expected perfection, what does perfection mean there? When your best friend is gushing over a girl, saying over and over again, 'bro, she's, like, perfect.' What does that even mean?
What makes a human perfect? Is it pretty eyes? A killer body? A cute laugh, an unforgettable smile? There's no golden standard, no blueprint to physically, or mentally, compare yourself to, to be 'the perfect person.' And while that might sound daunting to some, to me it's promising. To me, it means that we can pave our own path, make our own kind of perfection.
I looked in the mirror, trying to convince myself of this. That I was my own kind of perfection.
If eoppa heard me say that to myself, he'd call me a loser.
