Zane's POV
Oreana asked them to join us at the small meeting room adjoining the hall. This time too, I followed behind Ariel as Oreana and Jerek led the way.
Eyes followed us, them. Everyone is curious about them, it is not every day a coloured is invited into the club, we have to be cautious. But bringing them here and leading them directly to the meeting room seems to draw their trust, we trust her so the rest of them will follow our example.
Oreana opens the door and we fill in one after the other. The room is cramped, the four chairs and table fit into the small space with documents and research papers messily scattered on the table. An overused computer is pushed in the corner with a separate table and chair.
It is a comfortable space to hold private meetings for us but I can tell that it is not up to their standards. Ariel's breath had become deeper, she seems to be captured in her own thoughts to the point that she is unaware of her surroundings. Skye, on the other hand, is on alert as if expecting to be jumped on any second.
Jerek scrambles to pick up the papers strewn on the table in embarrassment. But nobody is bothered by it, the tense silence is thick in the air keeping everyone on their feet and the chairs vacant.
" What are you, defender or offender?" Ariel said, voice clear and unwavering, a contrast to how she was minutes ago.
Oreana narrows her eyes slightly. Ariel is asking too many questions, telling her in the first place about our abilities was a risk. A risque that had to be taken. But giving her any more knowledge, I don't know how Oreana felt about that but I am confident. I trust her, if I hadn't I wouldn't have brought her here. No one in their right mind would break into a station without a reason.
" We come under none of the two" I answered her.
Jerek took that as a cue and started with his theory, " Our colour is different, aside from being invisible it also behaves differently."
" How so," Ariel asked him to continue, a concentrated look shadowing her face, absorbing the information.
" For example to create a shield you will have to mould your colour into one but for us," he drawled out the word looking at me then Oreana for confirmation, giving us a chance to interrupt.
"Our colour doesn't need to be moulded into an object" A file floated in the air finishing his statement. A couple more pages and files started floating in air arranging themselves into a neat pile on the table.
" I don't understand, how can-" Ariel struggled to find a suitable word, her eyes fully concentrated on the pile papers. An eager glow in eyes.
She wants to know more about us. Learn more about colourless. She is not disgusted.
"Ahh, it is kinda difficult to put into words but it is like having an extra pair of arms but invisible," Jerek explained moving his hands around as a fondness glows on his face.
" I understand. If you are not an offender you cannot understand an offender" she mumbled the common quote, sounding a little relaxed for some reason.
" You have your answers now, so are you going to help like you promised" Oreana challenged folding her arms, her side-swept hair shadowing her face into an intimating look.
" What do you plan on doing Oreana because I hope it is not what I am suspecting?" Ariel vocalized in a hard voice, placing her hand on the table and narrowed her eyes at Oreana, her demeanour changing.
" Your government threw us here, decided our faith single-handedly. It needs to fall" Oreana replied through clenched teeth. She is saying nothing of what needs to be said, of what could be said to bring to light the cruelty she faced.
" You want us to help you bring down the government leading a country of 24 billion people. Aside from being delusional how do you plan on doing that because Azure is no small country. And what do you want to destroy the peace for." Skye growled out striking his fist on the table, glaring at us.
I glared back at him with equal ferocity, what kind of peace is he talking about. Because all we have ever enjoyed is the unfiltered discrimination from the so-called government.
I gave an empty laugh at that, "If they were thinking about peace and harmony they wouldn't have thrown us here in this nameless town." I growled back.
A bitter taste dissolved in my mouth, the temperature in the room going up in meters.
" What kind of peace are you talking about. If you even knew a part of how they treat us here you would know why we are doing this" Oreana hissed at him.
"Nothing big enough to justify taking down the government and endangering the country" Ariel countered back. She doesn't know the weight of her statement, she may be right but we are not wrong either.
I struggled to hold back my colour, nipping at my fingers in an invisible presence as the memories appeared before my eyes.
I clutched her arm, jerking her to face me and glared down at her. Nothing, she calls getting beaten in the square for every silly thing as nothing.
" You are not like us, you are not from here. If you had to grow up as we did under the boot of an officer, of the fucking governer as they tightened our lashes you would know." I spoke lowly, my voice conveying my burning anger at her statement.
She is born in castles, in the rich cities, raised in the safety that she doesn't value.
My statement causes her to finch and I loosen my grip on her, trying to contain myself from lashing out at her.
She must have read the pain behind my eyes. Her face softens abandoning the hard look and her shoulders drop in sudden understanding.
Skye yanks my hand off her, pulling her behind him. He glares at me like a charged bull ready to punch me and I glare back at him.
A tense minute passes as nobody speaks
" We are here to help Zane" Ariel spoke making me break from the glaring match. I composed myself at her words, reminding myself that she is not the enemy, she is here to help.
" How are you going to break the government and even if you are able to achieve the impossible what are you going to get from the mess that Azure will be left in? What about the lives lost in the way" Her words seemed like a sharp knife of reality, cutting through the haze of anger.
I don't have an answer for that.
She is right, aside from revenge what do we expect to gain from the unstable condition of the country. Oreana and Jerek seems to be thinking the same thing, I share glances with them.
" We want to be heard Ariel, to be seen and anything less we do, they will cover the evidence," Oreana replied, composed. Trying to make her understand.
" You won't get what you want, they will look at you as a threat. Do you really think you will be accepted in Azure after you wreak havoc? A rebellion. An attack will not work in your favour."
Her words hit us like a wall, echoing in the silent room leaving us to contemplate and question ourselves.
