Leo's POV
Frustration washed over me in waves, forcing my to clench the edges of my seat so hard my knuckles were turning white.
Finally, I snapped. "Papà," I interrupted the long, droning speech I got to hear every time I asked this question. "Volere, Papà. I really want to go to a public school!"
My papà sighed, running a tired hand over his face. "I don't know, Cuor di Leone," he said, using his Italian nickname for me, meaning 'Lionheart'.
My rage subsided just as quickly as it came. "Sorry," I muttered. "But will you think about it?"
He smiled (which was more of a grimace), and replied, "Non sto promettendo niente," he warned, words slightly slurred, "tua madre è... Beh... Sei la figlia di tua madre, Leonardo. Un po 'testardo."
"I'm not promising anything, your mother is... well... You're your mother's child, Leonardo. Every bit as stubborn."
"Ok..." I stood up nervously, scenes of the past flashing through my head as I walked over to him.
"Do you... Need anything, Papà?" I asked hesitantly, standing awkwardly by my seat.
The second I spotted a dark look flash across his face, I knew it was time to go. "Ciao Papà!" I called hurriedly, scenes of the past flashing through my head as I pulled the door shut behind me.
Drunk by day and violent by night, my parents were not ones to reckon with.
Papà especially.
