The brisk summer air felt nice on our sweaty skin. Me and Kurt and the others relaxed in our foxholes. The smoke, dust, and dirt had settled to the ground. We all sat there in silence staring into the beautiful sunset. I had not seen one seen one so delightful ever since the day before I left for the front. The crickets chirped cheerfully and birds I had not seen before flew in front of us. I was now loosening up.
As we continued to lay there, some fell asleep and some talked for hours. Some officers sat on top of the pillbox, some in trees, and some in foxholes. Behind me, I heard the clinging of bottles coming from the pillbox. Beer? Wine? Schnapps? I started to get excited. Next to me, Kurt was asleep with his helmet pulled over his eyes.
"Kurt, wake up!"
"Wh....what is it Albert?"
I looked back at the pillbox, I heard laughter inside. Oil lamps slowly began to lit. I could see the light through the thin rectangular openings of the pillbox.
"Um, what about us?" I soldier yelling in front of us.
I saw a shadow of an officer that was walking to one of the openings. "There's not enough for each of you to get your own!" He yelled.
"We can make it enough!"
"Fine! One bottle for one foxhole! I only have 60 in here so get your asses over here!"
"I'll go get some." Albert said to Kurt.
"Ok, most of its for me. I did more of the killing!"
I rolled my eyes and dragged himself out of his foxhole. Other soldiers raced towards the entering of the pillbox, and each excited with one bottle. Albert grabbed his and sprinted back towards Kurt. Kurt smiled and rubbed his hands together, his mouth craving the bitter taste of the beer.
"Give it to me!"
Kurt laid his hands on the cold beer, his mouth watering wildly. He grabbed a bottle opener that was in my pocket and popped the bottle open. The sound was nice and crisp, making their mouths water even more. I watched as Kurt brought the bottle to his mouth and took two sips of of the refreshing beer. He smiled and laughed while making himself more comfortable in the foxhole.
"That's nice."
I was now given the beer, I couldn't wait any longer. The rim of the bottle reached my lips and I started to drink. Adrenaline ran through my body. I was now too relaxed. I laughed along with Kurt and we continued to talk.
"Give it back to me!" He commanded. "Now!"
Kurt yanked the bottle out of my hands, making some of it spill onto the ground. He was drinking it down like he was a mad man! Now half of the bottle was gone.
"Now, to me."
"Just one more, then you could have the rest, deal?"
I shook in agreement. One more he said but it ended up being five. I was now pissed off. We were acting like kids now, not sharing and arguing about the small things. But it was no my turn, I wanted to make it last. Kurt let out a big burp and grabbed some cigarettes from his left breast pocket.
"Want one?"
"No, I do not smoke?"
"What? Your a grown man and you don't smoke? What are you? Here come on, take one."
"Fine!" I said, just to get the pressure off.
I stuck the small paper tube filled with harmful drugs into my mouth, feeling disgusted on what I was doing. My mother would have killed me if I put one of these 'cancer sticks' into my mouth. Kurt brought the lighter to it and lit it. A puff of smoke went up above me. I coughed the first couple of times I used it but I got used to it. It tasted horrible so I was about to throw it on the ground but Kurt grabbed my arm.
