SAM'S P.O.V.
My heart hammered in my chest as I stared at the the boys' jackets. It was hard not to immediately accuse her of being involved in whatever happened last night. But I like to hear people out before making accusations. I hope to hell she'll be honest with us.
"Excuse me, but where did you get those jackets?" I ask her politely. I watch her face closely as she glanced at the chair in the corner.
"I knew you'd ask, Dearie! But before I answer, let me do something first! I need to make sure our conversation is private!" She waves her hands in the shape of a box, pointing to the four corners of the booth while murmuring words in a language that I can't understand. I can see an almost clear mist settle over the booth and everything inside of it.
"There now! It's like we're not even here! One big empty space on the Boardwalk!" She grins and claps her hands triumphantly. Her light green eyes are darting between me and Courtney like a long lost friend trying to see how much we've changed over the years.
"My name is Lavinia. And you're Samantha and her older sister, Courtney! I can't believe I finally get to meet you two in person!" She sounds pretty giddy over meeting us. Almost like we're celebrities or something. I don't know why, but I don't feel threatened by her at all.
"So, are you a witch or what?" Courtney asks her with great interest. She finds stuff like that fascinating.
Lavinia winks at her and says, "No, my child! Just an old gypsy trying to see a prophecy fulfilled before the end of her life!" I look deeply into her eyes, trying to detect any deceit in what she said. But all I see is honesty and pure trust...in me. And Courtney. As a team. What?
"What does the prophecy say? And you never answered my questions about the jackets." I remind her urgently.
Her eyes go wide, and she abruptly jumps up and scurries over to the chair, scoops up the jackets and promptly dumps them in my lap.
"I suggest you wear the one that belongs to the boy you're closest to, and then carry the others. The others aren't meant for you and won't do you any good."
She helps me put on Paul's jacket and holds David's trench coat out for Courtney to put on. Courtney looks at it like it'll give her a contagious disease. Lavinia grins at her and waits patiently.
"Just put the damn thing on! You and him can argue about it later." I whisper to her as she wraps the black trench coat around her shoulders. I hand her Dwayne's jacket and I hold on to Marko's.
"I've known of this prophecy for over 500 years. It was the first one ever given to me. You see, certain gypsies are gifted with certain powers, depending on their first prophecy. I just had to wait for the right pair to enter this world to see my first prophecy fulfilled. You are that pair, my babies!" She's smiling like a schoolgirl now. This all too damn strange for me.
"Hold on! Is one of your powers time travel?" Courtney asks her with a raised eyebrow.
"Why yes! Yes it is! That's why you two are here, after all!" Lavinia answers like she's taking to a child.
"Well, can you tell us what the prophecy says?" Courtney asks her in a rushed voice. I don't blame her. I'm getting antsy too, just sitting here when we don't know what happened to the boys. Either that or Paul's hyper active tendencies are rubbing off on me. Lavinia clears her throat:
Clear of eyes
And pure of heart
Two will be chosen
Right from the startOne with strength
The other with emotion
The pale ones survive
With love and devotionSisters have knowledge
Brothers have skill
But intertwined together
They go in for the killTo come to an end
Or to make it last
The future is nothing
Without visiting the past
I am 100% speechless by the time she's done reciting the prophecy. What the hell did it mean? Was it cut and dry simple? Or was there a deeper meaning to it? We need to memorize it, and then analyze it when we're alone later."As for the cards, those were the exact cards that appeared to me in a vision over 500 years ago. Exactly how you chose them, laid out the same way and everything. I'm afraid it freaked me out a bit to see it that night because I knew you were one of my chosen girls. Take the prophecy and make of it what you will. " Lavinia said to me with a twinkle in her eye.
"Ok, so where are the boys? I'm starting to really freak out over here! Can you at least tell us how you got their jackets and if they're alright?" Courtney asks with slight panic in her voice.
"They're fine for now. I used my powers to sneak into the room they're being kept in to let them know you two are indeed alive. Those poor saps were beside themselves thinking the worst, even though that Paul character swore he'd know if you were dead, Sam. He rambled on about a soul connection or something. Strange kid that one. Anywho, they gave me their jackets and made me swear to give them to you no matter what. As for who has them, I'm sure of one thing, and that is that it took more than one person to overpower them like that. I had nothing to do with it. I happen to like those troublemakers. I've been keeping my eye on them for years and years. Like my own children." She says with a smile. At least they know we're alive and aren't still worrying over it.
This just keeps getting weirder and weirder. How are we supposed or find them? Where do we start looking. I'm hoping Lavinia can give us a clue, so I turn to her to ask for more info. What in the blue hell?! She's fucking gone! Just like the night I met her, she's gone. Except this time, she seems to have disappeared into thin air!"She could have at least left us a number or something. I mean, shit! How are we supposed to find her if we need her?" Courtney is muttering more to herself than to me.
"I have no clue. Let's get the hell out of here. We need to make it to the cave before the sun goes down. That way we can check things out before any creatures of the night wake up and come looking for us!" I drape Marko's jacket over my arm and loop my arm with hers. I can't help but to walk with a little pep in my step. I feel like we were just granted a small win in getting the truth from Lavinia and also a big win by surviving our swim in the Pacific ocean last night. I have to believe in what Lavinia told us. Without that, we'd have absolutely nothing right now. It brings me hope that I didn't have before, and that's enough for now.
