Bharat
After weeks of dead ends, I finally had something. The lorry driver and his apprentice had been caught on their way back to Hyderabad. I wasted no time calling Karthik.
Ten minutes later, he arrived with Rahul and two girls. They introduced themselves quickly—Anjali and Shivani. The names didn't escape me; the bond between them and the boys was obvious.
"Were you able to interrogate them?" Shivani asked before she even sat down, her voice trembling with urgency.
"Did they say anything?" Rahul pressed.
I shook my head. "They're stubborn. Won't reveal a thing."
"Let me have them," Karthik said suddenly, his voice low, steady. Too steady.
I frowned. "That's against procedure. You can't lay a hand on them."
"No bruises. No cuts. One minute. If I fail, you do it your way," he countered.
I studied him for a moment, something sharp and dangerous burning in his eyes. Against my better judgment, I sighed. "One minute. But no visible marks. My job's already on the line."
His lips curved faintly. "Finally."
