Chapter 6: A "peaceful" evening

Mark POV

The rest of the day, together with Ethan and Tyler, was very pleasant and our conversations managed to get me distracted from Dave's phone call. I already had a hunch that my "boyfriend" might call me again on that day. //I can't stand it anymore. Why is he doing this to me? What have I done wrong to deserve this?//, I asked myself when I was in the bathroom to freshen up a bit after having needed a moment for myself. "You're just pathetic. You can't keep it together and not break down for even one whole day.", I whispered to my reflection in the mirror and shook my head, before I washed my face again. I looked in my tired eyes and sighed loudly. With a depressed voice I said to myself: "How long can I keep this up before somebody gets suspicious and might connect the dots?" I then closed my eyes, causing me to relive the memory of my conversation with Dave a few hours ago.

Flashback

A few hours earlier

My friends and I were just about to start the game and began our recording when suddenly my phone started ringing. Confused and nervous I took my phone out of my pocket and opened the display. I regretted it immediately when I saw the name on it and held my breath. After a few seconds a sigh rolled over my lips and I looked at my friends with an apologetic look. "I got to take this. I'll be right back you all.", I explained to them and stood up carefully. Then I quickly walked over to the small kitchen of our office and locked the door behind me. I took a deep breath before I accepted the call and put my phone up to my ear. Immediately I heard the voice of my "boyfriend": "Mark. Nice that I managed to reach you. I just wanted to let you know that I'd love to see you tomorrow in the afternoon. No buts, no excuses. You know what else happens to you Mark, my darling, if you are late or don't show up."

"I... I'll come...", I gave up on starting an argument after having another shiver down my back from the memory that came up from the last time I disobeyed him. I could already see the grin on Dave's face in front of me and I looked ashamed onto the floor with tears in my eyes. Then it came from my abusive partner: "Very good. That's my good boy. When I come over I want you to wear the gift I got you the last time and on your bed." "U-understood. I will not disappoint you.", I answered with a weak voice and I could feel my embarrassment bubbling up in my body. Shortly after that I heard: "I'll see you tomorrow. Don't forget it dear." Before I could say anything else, Dave had already ended the call and I just stood there in the kitchen completely upset from what just happened. I took a deep breath and put my phone away, before splashing my face with cold water and deciding to go back to the others after calming down a bit more.

Flashback ends

I felt the tears in my eyes come back when I opened them again and wiped them away immediately. "What did I do to deserve this?", I asked myself again and tried to calm me down again before I would walk out of the bathroom to cook dinner with Jack. I was still very nervous inside, but I didn't want to ruin Jack his vacation with us by making him worry. With a deep breath I stepped down the hall back to the living room, where Jack was watching the news. Carefully it rolled over my lips: "Ready to cook dinner buddy?" "Of course! I could eat a horse!", answered Jack happily with a big grin on his face and stood up from the couch. His enthusiasm brought a smile to my lips and I had to almost laugh a bit. Together we went to my kitchen and got everything out, which we need to make our dinner.
