My eyes slightly opened, as I groaned. I felt someone grabbing me, and shaking me.
"Y/N, come on! This is the third time I've tried waking you up." Ah, yes my mom. The best alarm clock there is. Except that you can't hit her and go back to sleep unless you want to get grounded.
"What for?" I asked, yawning and sitting up.
"Remember your cousin's birthday party I was talking about the other day?" She asked. I groaned.
"Mom, I'm literally going to be the only person there over the age of 12." I said. It was true. My cousin was 10, pretty popular for his age, and I was NOT up to get bullied by little preteens and children. It was either talk to those kids or talk with adult moms about..I don't..taxes or something? Being 19 is such an awkward age of socialization. Too old to talk to younger teens, but too young to relate to adults.
"Come on Y/N, you promised. I told you I'd take you out wherever you wanted for dinner if you went with me." She said, grinning at you. I sighed. Only bribery can make me go.
"Fine." I mumbled, getting up and getting ready for the party.
"Thank you, dear!" She said, walking out of your room.
I sighed, deciding on what to wear. I picked out a t-shirt, some mom jeans (it's the 80's what do you expect?), and some white sneakers. I tucked in my shirt, posing to myself in the mirror, and immediately cringing afterwards.
I walked downstairs, ready for whatever hell was awaiting for me. The two of us left the house, driving over to our rich aunt's house. Basically the only thing I'm looking forward to. I could probably sneak upstairs into her guest bedroom or her room with the pool table.
"Damn, why are all the neighbors out and about today?" I asked my mom.
"Language, Y/N. Also I have no clue.." She said, glancing and looking back at the road.
Before I knew it, we had arrived. There were so many cars. My stomach churned.
I don't know how I'm going to deal with all of these people here..
As we walked to the front door, I noticed a big trailer sort of thing. There were guys moving something on a metal roller, but I couldn't see it. My mom knocked on the door, only for my aunt to open it.
"Welcome, I'm glad you two came!" She said, seeming very bubbly. I smiled at her, walking in and seeing all of the people there.
Well, shit..
I immediately walked to the food table. Luckily there weren't many people in that area. I grabbed a few things, leaning against the wall and eating. The sounds of kids screaming and laughing filled the air, along with a bit of adult conversation going on in the other room. I looked at the stairs, seeing nobody on the second floor.
Surely, nobody would notice if I went up there-
As I was about to walk upstairs, I was interrupted by loud and excited kids screaming. I jumped, turning around to go see what the fuss was about. I looked into the room, seeing a big clown looking animatronic thing?? It was a bit creepy for my taste, but the kids sure seemed to go nuts over it. I have to admit though..the animatronic was very well made. It could move slow and fast, all while managing to move smoothly and look almost alive. It was pretty impressive.
Stop being a nerd, Y/N..
I felt someone behind me, and I turned around, seeing my mom.
"You having fun?" She asked, giggling slightly.
"Yep. Having a blast." I said, sarcastically.
"I know it's boring. We'll leave after he opens presents, okay?" She said. I nodded.
"Oh! I forgot to mention..Do you remember Michael? Michael Afton? The dude that didn't talk that much?" She asked. I nodded, raising an eyebrow.
"Well, he's here! He apparently works for the place that brought over this robot thing. If you get bored, you could go talk to him." She said, winking. I cringed. Why was she like this with boys my age?
I looked over where she pointed out, seeing him leaning on the wall with his arms crossed. He looked the same. Slightly more matured, but for the most part the same.
Michael and I used to be in the robotics club together. He never talked too much, but he was friendly when you got to talking with him. He only had a few friends. I may have been one of them..I'm not really sure. We'd only had a few conversations before, and those didn't last too long.
After zoning out and thinking, I saw him appear in front of me.
"Y/N! How are you?" He asked, looking down at me. I forgot how tall he actually was.
"Oh, hi Michael! I'm good. It's been a while since I've seen you." I said.
"Yeah, I saw you over here and figured you needed someone to talk to." He said, smiling. I guess I forgot how calming his voice was. He's British, though I don't know why since we're in Utah. Perhaps he had immigrated here?
"You know, you look kind of different than you did in high school. I'm not sure what it is..But it's a good different! Don't worry." He said, chuckling awkwardly.
I knew his awkward, shy side would come out eventually.
"Oh, yeah." I laughed slightly.
"So, what are you doing here?" He asked me.
"I was uh, kind of bribed to come here." I laughed. He chuckled.
"Yeah, I get that. I'm just here to work. It is my dad's company, I guess, so why would I work elsewhere?" He said. My eyes widened.
"It's your dad's? Did he make the animatronics?" I asked. He grinned.
"Yes, actually! It's kind of his thing." He said.
"I've never seen any animatronics work as well as those." I said. He smiled.
"Well, thank you. He works very hard on them." He said. Suddenly my mom walked over.
Oh god.
She smiled, looking at Michael.
"Hi, Michael! I haven't seen you since that last robotics contest that you guys had senior year." She said. He smiled back, making conversation with her. I stood to the side, pretending to pay attention.
"Well, Y/N, I think that job doesn't sound too bad, does it?" I heard her say. I zoned back in.
"Huh?" I asked. She laughed.
"Michael here was talking about a spot opened for his job! And you've definitely been needing one." She said.
How the hell did we get into a conversation about jobs?
"I-I mean I could look into it!" I said, unsure of what to say. He smiled.
"Well, we'd love to have someone like you. And it'd be pretty neat to have a friend to work with." He said, handing you a business card with his phone number on it.
"I suppose I should get back on duty. It was good talking with you!" He said, looking at me and walking away.
"See, Y/N? You got a boy's number without even trying." She said, winking and elbowing you. You rolled your eyes.
Can this party just end already?
AHH I HOPE YOU GUYS ENJOYED THIS CHAPTER! it was a little boring ik but there will be more coming!
