The world used to be a wondrous place many centuries ago. That was filled with daemons, witches, and vampires, now in the twenty-first century, they are but gone. Overtaken by humans who don't realise that we live among them. -Pippa Procter

He keeps my hand close to his lips as he gave a slight smirk. "Tell me, Miss Procter. What do you know about your ancestry?" I gave him a confused look, "only that our family line is powerful, and it can be traced back to two centuries at the moment" Matthew lets go of my hand. Following him to the desk. "We can trace almost all witches to four original witches in the 17th and 16th centuries. That's why I was hoping to ask you if we could have your blood to test it" I take a few deep breaths as I process the information. "My only condition is that I help run the blood work" Both Matthew and Miriam looked perplexed by request.
They glanced at each other. Miriam was the first to answer, "Have you got any training?" She crosses her arms while sizing me up. "I'm a recently graduated doctor. I have done blood work before" I sigh and sit down on one of the seats. "So there's a genetic component to the genes of witches," I ask both of them. They again looked perplexed. I smirk at them. "Hmm, that is correct. It's taken us some time to collect this database", Matthew explains while showing some of the DNA markers for some witches. Placing my bag down and taking off my jacket, I offer my arm to Matthew. "Take my blood and let's test it" He takes it gently like I was made of glass.
Miriam gets everything ready to be able to take my blood. First, he wraps a piece of material around my arm to the blood supply to my arm. After that, he cleans the area. "You'll feel a slight pinch," Matthews says to distract me from the pain of the needle. Biting my lip as I was looking away to stop myself from thinking of the pain. "Tak-Take a few samples", I whisper, but I knew that they heard. After taking a few more vials, as I suggested, the room around me started to sway slightly. "Philippa .... are you alright-" That was all I heard when I fell into darkness.
Matthew quickly catches when she falls to turns to Miriam. "I've got her. I'll put her in my office" He picks her up like she's glass then places her on the sofa in the office. Turning to Miriam, "You can go if you like. I'll run her blood work." "Are you sure?" He nods his head, Miriam hesitantly leaves. Nothing could change Matthews's mind once he's set his mind to something.
Night falls in Oxford. Matthew sit's with a glass of wine while waiting for the results of Philippa's blood work. The database did a general health check; something was surprising with the test results.
I open my eyes to the blinding lights of the lab. Groaning, I place my hand over my eyes. I felt I got hit by a bus. Slowly sitting up, I look around the office as my eyes slowly come back into focus. I take off the jacket placed over me; getting up, I stretch, but even that makes me wobbly. I hear the door open as I hold onto the sofa. "Philippa, your wake. How are you feeling?" The Lovely voice of Matthew Clermont greets me. "A bit dizzy, but other than that, hungry", I spoke gently. He walks over and offers his hand to me. I gladly take it.
I follow him out of his office. "Thank you, Matthew", I thank him as he gives me to check over. He nods his head and checks my heartbeat. I study his face secretly with a soft smile. "Do you mind I get some food?" I say after a while, "I can get something ordered for you, or I can ask Miriam if she could if you like" " Actually, there's a chinses restaurant down the street, if I remember correctly" Matthew moves to get his coat, I catch his wrist in my hand "It's no bother" he spoke so softly it made my heart skip a beat.
He returns when I was on the phone with Diana, I smile at him as he places the food in front of me. "Diana, I'll be home tomorrow. I am fine. It's just that I've gotten a job at a research lab today, and they asked me to start the night shift. Yes, I am being fed. Now go to bed. It's late" She finally agrees to go. Sighing as I shake my head. With Diana, sometimes I felt as if I was the older cousin. I ponder this as I take out the food. My stomach growls at the smell of it. Matthew sits beside me on the computer. Before eating, I place money on the counter beside his hand. Without saying a word, he pushes the money back towards me; I felt his side-eyed slight glare at me as I get stuck into the food.
Finding myself to eat a large amount of food he had gotten me along with an iced peach tea that he had gotten free was absolutely lovely. I stared for a moment at the two empty containers. Turning to Matthew, who was researching different know witch descendants. "Thank you for the food" He turns him slightly towards me with a small but coy smile. Moving to clear up the mess, I catch the leg of a table with quick reflexes. Matthew catches me. I couldn't resist saying. "I guess I keep falling for you," I ask him with a cheeky grin. He tries to contain his laughter but fails. We both end up laughing as I put myself upright. I put my trash in the bin. I felt lonely without his arms around me; I quickly shake these thoughts out of my head. I needed to focus on the task at hand. "Matthew has...uh... My results come back yet?" I ask tenses, my slight awkwardness rearing its head.
Sitting beside him, "Yes. I have found that your line traces back to quite a few original witches. I think with your line, and there might be some hidden or forgotten powers that you might be able to unlock" I look at all the genetic data, eyes sparkingly with the excitement of the knowledge.
Unknowingly Matthew studies my face as I take in the news. He looks down at his hands as he knew that she had a right to know this knowledge. Clearing his throat, this caught her attention. "There's something else I did while waiting for these test results. A general health check, since this takes less time than the other..." He maintains eye contact with her "Phillippa, there is no easy way to tell you this, but you are Pregnant" He searches her face for a sign of distress or if she is going to faint again.
I stare at Matthew's face with no emotion. Subconsciously I place a hand on my lower belly. I felt he set his hands on my shoulders to steady me and also to comfort me. "Matthew How. How can I be-be pregnant if I've never?" Pancing ... I started to panic. "Phillippa, perhaps you might have been assaulted?" He asks uncomfortably, "I don't party. I don't see the excitement in it" "Then it could be magical? Anything out of the ordinary" I cut him off "Ashmole 782" It dawns on me I had touched the symbol of the child, nothing else but the child. "Ashmole 782 is an extremely magical book, but I never expected it is making women pregnant without the normal means" I swallow hard. My breathing becomes erratic as tears swelling in my eyes.
I feel Matthew stands up and bringing my body against his chest. "Pippa ?" He whispers gently as he lets me get my emotions out. "Pippa? If you would like, I can take you to your home?" His voices so gently and relaxing. I wrap my arms around his waist as we stand in silence, just in each other's company.
From what I didn't know, the dangers awaited us in the coming months and days, but at that moment, I felt whole for the first time in my life.
