Lily's POV
I muttered the password to the portrait and walked into James and my common room. I sat down in front of the fire and stared into the flames, tempted to throw the letter clutched in my fist into the fire. I restrained myself and folded the paper, not looking at the smeared words on the paper that had gotten wet because of my tears. I kept it inside a random book in my bag. Turning back to the fire, I stared deeply into the hues of deep red, fiery orange and dazzling golden. It reminded me a lot of Professor Dumbledore's phoenix, Fawkes. If I ever went to meet Professor Dumbledore, Fawkes would fly to me and sit down on my shoulder. Professor Dumbledore would always chuckle at this and say that Fawkes liked me a lot. I smiled at these memories but the words of the letter kept coming back into my head. The smile was wiped off of my face when I remembered the cruel words written by the one person I used to adore the most when I was younger, the one person who used to love me and who I loved more than anyone else. I could feel tears travelling down my face but I didn't bother wiping them away. Just then, I heard James come into the Common Room. "Hi, Lily!" he said, cheerfully. I didn't turn towards him and just raised a hand in greeting. I heard him moving around so I assumed that he was going up to his room. Suddenly, I felt a pair of warm arms wrap around me and turned my head. My eyes locked with a pair of beautiful, warm hazel eyes. The fire made it look like they had golden flecks. I was pulled into him and I wrapped my arms around him. Finally, I let whatever I was feeling out. I started shaking with tears but James didn't let me go. When I calmed down a little, he asked me, with a worried look on his face "Lils, can you tell me what's wrong. If you can't, I understand." It shocked me a little that he had called me 'Lils' but it was also strangely comforting. I decided that I could tell him about the letter. "My s-sister, Petunia. She wrote me a letter." I said, my voice wavering. He gestured to me to go on. I took a deep breath and continued, "She started b-blaming me for...everything. Ever since my family found out I was a witch, Petunia has called me a f-f-freak." James's expression morphed from worried to enraged. "Our mother was recently diagnosed with c-cancer. But, I was leaving for Hogwarts the next day and my sister lives a little far away from my home. So, s-she wrote everything into the letter. She said that it was because of me that our mother got cancer, I had been the one who had injured our dad in a car accident a few months ago and everything bad that had happened to our family was because of ME!" the volume of my voice kept rising as I said this and I practically yelled the last word. James pulled me into a hug again and started whispering soothing things in my ear which countered everything Petunia had said. For some reason, I wanted to believe him. But, could I?
