(MADDISON'S POV)
4am.
4am and I'm still thinking about that little pep talk Connor gave me back in the nurse's office.
Keep Your Chin Up.
Only if he knew how tough it was for me to even keep my chin straight, it's always down.
Keep Your Chin Up. Keep Your Chin Up. Keep Your Chin Up.
The only words swirling around my mind right now.
I stand up from my bed and switch on my tv. Maybe that'll keep me busy from my thoughts.
1 minute.
The tv only kept me busy for 1 minute.
Why won't he leave my mind!
I put my pillow on my face, groaning in defeat.
A knock came from my door and I removed the pillow on my face to look at the door.
The feeling of shock came running to my mind.
What if it's a thief? A killer? Wait, they wouldn't knock, or would they?
I laid there on my bed as an idea popped up in my head.
Play dead!
As soon as I closed my eyes and held in my breath, my door burst open.
The person lingered over me and put their hand towards my nose to feel if I was breathing.
I made sure to keep my breath in.
He started shaking me then soon after slapped me on my cheek.
Even though that really hurt, I made sure to stand still.
"MOM! DAD! COME QUICK! I THINK MADDISON IS DEAD!"
I opened my eyes in realization that it was my little brother above me.
I quickly tumbled over him and put my hand over his mouth. He widened his eyes and tried to scream against my hand.
"Shhhh!" I whisper-shouted at him.
He nodded and I removed my hand, resulting him to screaming anyway.
I quickly put my hand over his mouth again, glaring at him with narrowed eyes.
I could feel his smirk under my hand as mom and dad burst into my room.
"What happened? Is everything alright?" My mom shouted.
Dad calmed down and rolled his eyes.
"It's just Marcus and Maddison shit."
Mom slapped dad on his shoulder and he winced, resulting in me and Marcus bursting in laughter.
"How many times have I told you to not swear in front of them?"
"What? Maddison is 18 and Marcus is 12, and judging by the world they live in, I'm pretty sure they know every swear word in the book. Am I right?" Dad said, referring the last sentence to us.
We both hummed in agreement and mom groaned in frustration.
"I swear you're the one who polluted their minds, Leo, and if I ever hear any swear words escape both of your mouths, including your dad, believe me, you're going to see hell on earth."
Dad and I gulped, taking in mom's threat as Marcus just stared at mom with wide eyes.
"Now, Maddison, get off your brother and go to sleep. It's around 4 o clock in the morning and by this time we are supposed to be in deep slumber, not being fully awoken by screaming. This is not how I wanted to start my birthday." Mom said.
