One day, like a lot of others, Five and Violet find themselves on the roof outside of her bedroom window. The air was brisk and rustled the trees, the sound gentle, and from where they sit they could see the stars shining brightly above them.

That day had been a rare good one.

The two talked about what they were going to do once they'd be able to leave. They made up scenarios, fake lives for themselves, losing themselves in dangerous daydreams. They laughed together. Smiled. They wondered what would be different if they had been born normal.

Violet shivered as a breeze blew by.

Five wasted no time in handing her his sweater. It was navy blue with black diamonds on it. One she had gotten him for his fifteenth birthday when she was confident enough to sneak out and buy it. She accepted it, and if Five was shocked, he said nothing as she shifted closer to him for his warmth.

He seemed to radiate heat despite the winter months rolling on, and Violet hesitated, debating internally before shyly resting her head on his shoulder. At first he froze, not wanting to mess up the rare moment of intimacy, but slowly relaxed as they continued to talk softly.

"You think we could live together?" He asked, the both of them lost in watching the stars.

She thought for a moment and nodded. "...wouldn't survive on my own..." she murmured, voice small.

Five shook his head down at her. "You'd be fine. You'd just replace me with a cat or something so you'd have long lasting companionship."

She let out an exhale of a laugh. "You share some personality traits. Not-" she tried again as the words got stuck in her throat. "Not sure I'd know the difference."

He playfully glared at her. "Yeah? I think a dog would be a good replacement for you," both their eyes dance with amusement. "But one of those small ones that look cute but when you go near them they turn into little demons."

She poked his arm in disapproval.

He tipped his head back and laughed.

She tried to hide her smile.

Things trailed off into a calm quiet, eventually, which got Violets anxiety running.

"You wouldn't leave me... right?" She whispered, head still on his shoudler.

When he straightened she lifted her head. He glanced down at her with a frown.

"Why would you say that?"

She shrugged lightly. "Just don't want to end up somewhere without you."

"You won't have to," he assured her. "We're sticking together no matter what."

Their eyes met and she let out a breath of relief she didn't know she'd been holding. She knew she had a bad habit of overthinking things and working insecurities over in her mind until they became too much, but he understood that.

"Promise?" She whispered.

Five linked his pinkie with hers and with such conviction, responded, "promise."
