Lola's POV

"Lola are you ready!" My best friend Paige yelled from the living room of my small apartment. I quickly pulled my sandals on and grabbed my purse before running out of my bedroom. I didn't know we were going out until about 1 hour ago and Paige did not want to be late for our double date. Yes, double date. Paige and I became best friends when we started working at the same high school around two years ago. She recently got engaged to her high school sweetheart and I was very, very single. But I didn't mind, I loved my life whether or not I was in a relationship. Nonetheless, Paige and her fiancé Brandon insisted on me going on a date with Brandons childhood best friend, CJ. We were meeting them at this small, but fancy restaurant that overlooked the bay. When we arrived Brandon and CJ were already seated at our table, and when they saw us they stood up to greet Paige and I.

"Hey sweetheart." Brandon gave Paige a gentle kiss on the lips before pulling her chair out for her. CJ just stood there after waving hello, so I awkwardly sat down across from Paige who gave me an apologetic look. She explained to me that CJ is a very nice guy, he is just awkward around people he's never met before.

"So CJ, where are you working?" Paige asked to break the silence among our group.

"I started working at my dads company at the beginning of this year, it is the best job I have had so far it's amazing." CJ explained with a big smile.

"Wow that sounds sounds great, how is it working there?" I asked him, and he went on and on to tell me every little detail about his job. CJ had this way about him that made everything he said sound egotistical, like he was bragging about his job. Nothing against him or his dad, but he's 25 and is working for his dad, it's not like he had to work hard to get that job. After about 10 minutes of CJ just talking about himself our waiter came over and interrupted him. And as soon as he left, CJ began talking again. I felt Brandon kicked CJ's foot underneath the table before he gave him a look, as if to say 'dude talk to her.'

"So are you from around here?" CJ got the hint and finally stopped talking about himself and asked me a question.

"Yes I grew up in San Francisco, I moved back here after college-" I started to explain but CJ cut me off.

"Where did you go to school?"

"UC Berkle-" Once again, CJ cut me off so he could speak.

"I got in there, went to Princeton instead since I'm a legacy. Best 4 years of my life, all I did was party and play lacrosse." CJ bragged and it was all beginning to make sense. I knew Brandon came from a rich part of the southern Bay Area, but he seemed so normal compared to CJ. I didn't know if he knew this about CJ or if he was just oblivious, but I'm kind of upset he even set us up. Our waiter came over with our food, and throughout the rest of the dinner CJ barely talked to me. Halfway through our meal I saw Brandon give CJ another look to tell him to start talking to me.

"What do you do, Lola?" CJ asked, the first time in about 30 minutes that my supposed date said a word to me.

"I am a history teacher at Independence, Paige and I work there together. I teach 11 and 12th graders, most of my classes are American history and government -"

"Oh so you must be a liberal then. I hope you're teaching isn't biased, you can't force your political views onto your students." CJ began acting incredibly rude, and of course he didn't stop there. "I'm sure you don't talk about any of the good things Donald Trump does like the tax cuts, it's all of the bad things. He is the best president we've had, way better than that idiot Obama."

"Ok I'm going to stop you right there. As most other teachers, I don't let my political views get in the way of my teaching. I teach all the way from before the American revolution to your beloved president. While I do not agree with most anything Trump does, I would compromise myself as a good teacher by ignoring him. Unlike our government, I know that ignoring something doesn't make it go away. I would rather educate my students on everything that just on select things. I talk about the unfair treatment of Native Americans who are the rightful owners of this land. I talk about the awful treatment of the LGBTQ+ community in this country. And I talk about the discrimination Black Americans face when they are forced into jail and killed left and right for a minimal crime that a white man would be let off with a slap on the wrist for. And as much as I talk about the lows of American history I talk about the highs, though there are few. So no, my teaching isn't biased and neither is my personal opinion. But as a woman, or even just a human being, in this country I cannot support Donald Trump in any way shape or form. I guarantee you support Donald Trump because you come from a family of Republicans and are too stupid to form your own political views." I finished my rant, Paige was laughing hysterically and Brandon tried to keep in his giggles. CJ had a look of shock on his face, surprised that any of that came out of my mouth.

"I-"

"No, you already fucked up don't even try." I said with a small laugh. Without another word CJ stood up, tossed a $100 bill on the table and left.

"At least he paid for you." Paige managed to say through her laughter. I rolled my eyes and shrugged at her words, I did get a free meal out of his awfulness. Our waiter came over with the check so we could pay and leave.

"Are you sure you don't need a ride home?" Brandon asked me once we were outside of the restaurant.

"No but thank you. I'll see you guys soon." I said, giving Paige a hug before they left. Our dinner ended so early that the sun hasn't even begun to set, so I was going to go for a walk along the bay. Not even two steps into my walk I felt someone tap on my shoulder, signaling me to turn around.

"Hi can I help you?" I asked politely. The man who tapped on my shoulder was of average height, maybe 5 or 6 inches taller than me. He had these gorgeous light blue eyes and dark brown hair with a scruffy beard to match. He was wearing a plain white t-shirt tucked into some dark blue pants with white high top converse, he looked really familiar but I couldn't quite figure out why.

"I was sitting one table over and I have to say I almost jumped in on that conversation but you definitely didn't need my help." The man said with a laugh, and as soon as I heard that accent I realized who I was speaking to. I almost didn't recognize him without the bleach blonde hair and the baby face.

"Well thank you. I'm Lola." I smiled, reaching out my hand to shake his.

"I love that name, I'm Niall." I was already 14 when One Direction first got big and I grew out of them by the time I turned 18. I knew some of their solo songs but I was more of a casual fan.

"I was about to go for a walk along the water do you want to come with?" I asked him, I wouldn't mind some company even though I just had the worst date ever.

"I would love to." Niall and I began walking towards the docks together, just chatting and getting to know each other.

"Tell me about yourself?" Niall asked me.

"As you know my name is Lola. Um, I have lived in the Bay Area my whole life and I went to UC Berkley. Oh and I'm a high school history teacher." I listed off a few things about me for Niall.

"No no, I mean tell me about you. What makes you you." Niall pushed, he was showing a lot of interest in me for some reason. And I did as he asked, and by the time the sun was set Niall and I knew all these tiny details about one another. We found ourselves sitting at the end of a dock we found, just enjoying each others company and watching the moon shining over the bay.

"Do you want to come back to my place?" I whispered, and Niall's response was to stand up and reach his hand out for me to grab on to.
