Later That Night

"BABY! Did you make that appointment with Dr. what's-his-face?! The pain in my chest ain't getting better by the hour, the last time I visited him!" Abi hollered from the bathroom to reach her husband, Xan.

Xan was currently putting a pot of boiling water to fix tonight's meal, while Abi was in the middle of stepping her right foot within the shower. Before she could submerge herself behind the shower curtains, Abi snapped her necklace from her neck and placed it on the toilet seat to prevent it from getting wet.

"Yeah babe, I hear ya'. I think the receptionist made the appointment two weeks out. Dr. Detrial said that it wasn't urgent," Xan woefully answered back to his wife as he looked through each cabinet for his utensils, "where the hell did that spoon go?" He whispered to himself.

"Nah, bae that's too long- ah," Abi winced silently, cutting off her sentence. Abi's pang in her chest grew in intensity, and the scalding, hot water in the shower didn't make it any better. The bathroom was full of humid heat and became difficult hard to breathe in. Abi's legs lost their feeling, her vision became blurry, and she felt winded.

"Where's my phone? Something not feeling right. I gotta call Dr. Hudson," Abi's said to herself as she reached for her phone on the edge of her three-door drawer, while her other hand clutched her chest.

"Feels like I'm having a dang heart a-ATTAAACK," Abi screeched once she felt her one foot in the tub slip from under her and cause her to topple completely out of the shower. With no balance, Abi's head knocked on side of the toilet seat, making her land completely on her back, and her necklace slide to the other ducked-off corner of the toilet.

Abi seethed in pain, as she laid wet and vulnerable on the bathroom floor. She instinctly clutched her aching belly bump, once she felt the pain in her chest spread down to her stomach.

"Oh no, no, no. My baby," Abi started hyperventilating and fidgeting in panic. Her eye's shot up to the drawer that her head laid next to, and tried to reach her hand up to the top of it and feel for her phone to call 911.

"Mommy's going to fix this, mommy's going to fix this. XANNNN-HELP!" Abi's felt tears prickle in her eyes once the pain immobilized her lower body. Xan heard his wife from the kitchen, turned off the stove, and ran to the bathroom.

When he barged in, a specific pain felt his way into his chest as well; loss.

Xan's eyes immediately went between his wife's legs and witnessed the flowing blood start to pool in a stream. His wife's eyes pleaded for him to make his next move, as her and the baby's life depended on such urgency.

"Xan. Baby, focus. The phone. G-get the phone. Hurry!" Abi hit her hand on side of the dresser to bring his attention to it so that he could find her phone laying on top of her nightgown. Xan, like a deer in headlights, grabbed the nightgown, instead, and took a towel from the drawer to placed between Abi's legs.

"Screw the ambulance. I'm taking you myself. We're not losing him, Abi," Xan said frantically, carefully leaning Abi up to rest on top of him so that Xan could loop her nightgown over her limp body.

"I don't f-feel good, Xan. I might have a spinal injury. We need an ambulance!" Abi started weeping and pleading. But, Xan was far more determined to taking Abi to the hospital himself.

"Oh, I'll call them, alright. To tell them to get that fucking Detrial to the hospital, before we get there," Xan spat in anger. Once Abi was dressed, Xan carried her bridal style out of their tiny one-bedroom apartment and to the car.

Xan drove like a bat out of hell to the hospital in under 20 minutes. Everything after that felt like a blur; they carried Abi inside on a lightening-fast gurney, leaving him at the automatic sliding door.
