HAPPY PRIDE MONTH EVERYONE!🏳️🌈 I know we may not be able to physically go to parades/festivals due to the pandemic, but that won't stop us from being ourselves and having fun!🥺😌
⚠️TW: mention of suicide, mental health issues and homophobia/transphobia ahead, please don't read if that could trigger you⚠️
I'm sure all of you are aware of the BLM (Black Lives Matter) movement going around and all the protests along with it. I am completely supportive of them and i believe the same things!🥰
If you didn't know, the BLM movement and Pride Month are actually very closely linked with each other. This is because pride month was "started" by a transgender black woman who fought for her rights. Her name was Marsha P. Johnson (picture shown above) and she was a trans-rights activist who was involved in the famous Stonewall protests.
⚠️*TW starts now*⚠️
In June 1969, the NYPD police raided a gay bar named The Stonewall Inn and used excessive force and violence while forcing everyone out of the bar. Marsha Johnson stood up for her beliefs and resisted arrest by the police and continued to lead many protests/riots demanding rights for the whole LGBTQ+ community. The NYPD police eventually apologized for their peers behaviors, however, the violence still exists up to this day as evidenced by the recent events these past few months.
Marsha and her other activist friend Sylvia Rivera helped found STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries ). It's an organisation to support gay and trans individuals who had been left homeless. While protesting and helping face discrimination directly, Marsha dealt with very prevalent mental health issues herself. Her legacy would forever be remembered after she passed away in 1992. Some say she took her own life, some say it was an attack, but from what i've seen, there's no proven explanation and her COD was ruled "undetermined".
⚠️*TW ends now*⚠️
All of the protests and riots were very influential and impactful in their time, but the Black and LGBTQ+ community still recurved discrimination and hate. As sad as this is, it is something that cannot be helped. HOWEVER, we cannot deny that our society's beliefs today compared to that time has shifted enormously. Slowly but surely, I am sure our society will become more and more accepting of peoples genders, race, sexual orientation, beliefs, gender identity, etc.
I just wanted to say that you are valid. No matter what is going on in your life right now and no matter if you're out or not, you will always be valid. Never forget that and if you ever feel like you aren't accepted or loved, just remember i love you and i accept you. There is a whole community on this app that will always accept you too because they've been through the same thing. They understand how you feel and what you're going through, including me. But just remember, love is love. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise🥰🏳️🌈.
I love you all and i hope you have an amazing pride month, even if you aren't out!😌😇😘💞
