Patients

I woke up to voices arguing outside my room. I figured that it was my Aunt and one of her officers. I finished all my jobs yesterday, so I didn't have to worry about washing clothes today. I got out of my bed and started to walk down to the cafeteria for breakfast.

One of Dawns officers found lots of canned food yesterday when he went on a supply run, so we had plenty of food for everyone.

I filled my plate up with strawberries, pancakes, and a glass of orange juice. I started eating my food, when Dawn came up to me.

"I need you to grab about five clean scrubs after you eat, we have our first five patients," she directed and left.

I quickly devoured the rest of my food and jogged to the laundry room. I grabbed the navy scrubs, since Dawn had made that the uniform to patients and green to the non police officers. I wondered around looking for my Aunts office since she never specified where it was.

"Hey Aunt Dawn, which rooms do I need to take these to?" I asked holding the scrubs up so she could see them.

"Here,'' she said plainly handing me a beige sticky note with five numbers on it.

I walked down the hall and delivered the uniforms. Doctor Edwards was in the last room with an unconscious African American that looked 18, the same age that I was. Edwards didn't acknowledge my presence, so I just placed the outfit on the counter.

"Hey Dawn, I finished everything, is there something else I could do?" I asked.

"Um, can you go see if Edwards needs help?"

I nodded and started to walk down the bland hallway. I thought that my Aunt might actually want to talk about how I'm doing here, but it doesn't really matter.

As I was walking I saw Doctor Edwards in the same room he was in before.

"Hey Edwards," I say walking into the room.

"Oh, Hello Carter, do you need anything?"

"No, I was just gonna ask if you need help with anything,"

"Um sure, just watch this patient for a bit, he's not doing well, and I want to make sure he survives," I nodded and sat down in a chair next to his bed and put in my earbuds.
