*Two Weeks Before*

"Hi, can I help you?" Some lady appeared in my face, startling me. I pushed my sunglasses back up and pulled my beanie down a little more.

"Um, yeah," I said. "I n-need help ring shopping."

"Okay," she said cheerfully. "Right this way." I followed the chipper woman over to an elevator and the two of us got on alone. I watched her press the button for the sixth floor. Damn, this was a big store.

"Shopping for your girlfriend?" She asked. I nodded. "Yeah. I've finally worked up the courage to just buy the ring. Asking her is a whole other story."

"Aww, how sweet," she smiled. I smiled back and fiddled with my sleeves nervously. I couldn't be recognised and risk my surprise being ruined.

When we reached the sixth floor, I followed the woman out of the elevator and over to the jewellery section. I had no idea what I was doing, only that Ari was a size 6 according to Nona.

"So, what's your girlfriend like?" The lady asked, sliding behind the counter.

"She's really lovely. She's very kind hearted and really cares for other people. Um... She's very energetic and spiritual, and she likes pink..." I trailed off, beginning to get lost in my thoughts of how perfect she was.

"Yep, I know that look. You're hopelessly in love," the clerk smiled. "You want the real engagement rings, not the showy ones." She pulled out a case and started pointing out different ones and explaining them to me, but I completely unfocused, staring at the one I knew was perfect. It was a princess cut white diamond on a gold band.

"That one," I said , interrupting her. "That's the one."

"Great," she smiled, pulling the ring out and closing the case, sliding it back under the counter. "Now, I just need a size."

"She's a six. And, can I have it engraved?"

****

As I left I smiled down at the message engraved on the inside of the ring. 'You're the love of my life, forever.' She'd know as soon as she saw it that I'd heard what she had said. And hopefully she'd know it was true. That she is the love of my life.

Forever.
