Brad's POV

🌸

After drinking one final glass of red wine, I put the bottle back in the fridge and rinsed the glass clean, then I went upstairs to check up on the kids before I went to sleep. I heard soft sobs coming from Bee's bedroom door, making me stop in my tracks as I listened closely.

That afternoon, we went to the hospital for Bee's check-up, then the doctor recommended him to undergo ear surgery. Since we heard the news, he had been off and distant, especially when Chris and I were making puns while grocery shopping.

I took a deep breath before knocking three times on his door and calling out his name. I peered in, then I saw him lying down on his bed as he tried to wipe some tears away from his eyes. When we made eye contact, he looked surprised.

"Dad? What are you doing here?" Bee said with a hoarse voice, confirming that he had been crying.

"I heard soft sobs coming from your bedroom. I wanted to check up on you," I told him honestly, then he squirmed in his bed and put his blanket over him.

"It's nothing, dad. Really. It's stupid," Bee said to me, then I sighed as I closed the door behind me, then I sat beside the back of his head, leaning on his bed's headboard as I did so.

"It's not stupid if it makes you sad, Bee. And I hate seeing you sad. I'm here to listen; you can tell me anything," I told my son, who removed the blanket from his face and turned to me.

"Dad, what did you and mum fight about?" He asked, then I sighed. I played with my fingers a little as I made my brain look for the answer he needed.

"We didn't fight, Bee. We just had a little misunderstanding, that's all," I said, then he frowned.

"That's all? You and I both know that you and mum aren't in good terms, dad. If what happened is enough to make mum visit grandad on such short notice, it's something big," Bee said, then I told him the truth.

"Dad did something stupid when he went to London. He got drunk, he let his insecurities get the best of himself, and almost, well, ruined his marriage completely," I said, then Bee frowned.

"But I would never hurt your mum on purpose, Bee. I love her very much," I said, then Bee held my hand.

"I want to believe that, dad. I mean, to be fair, you may or may not have been a good husband, but you've always been a good dad," Bee said, then I kissed his forehead. He gave me a small smile after, then he sighed.

"Okay, then. Since I've heard your side, it's time for you to hear mine," Bee said, then I gestured to him to continue.

"I'm scared of losing my hearing if my operation fails, dad. If I become completely deaf, I won't be able to pursue music anymore. My dream of going to Juilliard will no longer come true. Worst of all, I will never feel the joy music gives me whenever I play or listen to it," Bee said, then I rubbed his back to soothe him. Tears started flowing from his eyes, then I wiped them away with my thumb.

"There, there. It's normal to be scared. But, you have to know that even deaf people have a way of enjoying music," I said, then he looked at me as his eyes lit up.

"Do you want me to show you?" I asked Bee, who nodded his head. We both went to our home studio, where I set up my keyboard, which happened to be the very one I used when I showed Roe my composition. I managed to get it 16 years ago with my former music teacher's help, since students who knew me were fighting over the chance to play it, and I needed a new keyboard back then, so I decided to buy the keyboard so he could buy a new one. When I was done, Bee sat right next to me.
