It was only once the landscape reformed around them that Sirius noticed the large dent in the hourglass of the timeturner. They found themselves in a field; Luna felt the familiarity of it, from the disorderly grass to the sky, grey and swelling with rain.
'I think there's something wrong with the time turner... Do you know where we are?' The silence that followed his statement only proved that she did. Sirius turned around to find that he and Luna were stood in front of a cylinder-like house, coal black and slanted, with rocks haphazardly placed in the walls. 'Wow. I can't really talk, but this is a weird house.'
'This is home. My home.' Luna took in a sharp breath, closing her eyes. In an instant Luna's dreamy disposition was gone. Left behind was something broken, something that wasn't quite her. She dropped to her knees. Sirius saw part of himself in Luna. He tried to sit down next to her but before he could she leapt up. She ran up the steps and reached for the brass metal door handle. Sirius stopped her, confused.
'Luna wait, just wait. What's going on?'
'My mother. I can see my mother again. She passed away when I was a child. This is the last chance I have to talk to her again. Just let me pass.'
'Luna I'm sorry. You need to calm down. '
'No. No. I need to see her.' She tried to push the boy away but he stood firmly there.
'She might not even be in there.'
'I must try.'
'Alright, you can. Just think for a minute. Awful things can happen to those who meddle with time.' He walked Luna away from the door, for her own safety.
'What is there to think about?' she asked, exasperated.
'Well since this is your house and if your mum is in there, don't you think the younger version of you will be in there too? I don't know what'll happen if she sees you.'
'Do you think you could distract her?'
'Of course I will. But you'll need to be quick.' Luna hugged him, smiling a small bittersweet smile.
'Thank you.'
'It's alright.' He disappeared into the house and Luna sat down on the steps, waiting. A sense of longing hung in the air.
As Sirius pushed open the door voices could be heard to his left, so he moved towards the source of them. The room in which he had entered was a queer circular shape with walls of faded teal. The light from the windows highlighted the millions of dainty dancing dust specs that travelled around the room. It was hard to stay focused as the walls were painted with all manner of peculiar moving creatures. On the very far side were three beautiful portraits with a singular word under each. The first portrait showed a man with platinum blond, straggly hair. Under it read 'Believer.' Under the woman with a sweet smile it read 'Inquisitive' and under the beaming child it read 'Brave'. It was when he had reached the spiral staircase, rusting and bronze in colour, that he heard the voice of the young girl. His theory about who it could be was proven when he looked down the staircase. A woman with dirty blonde hair and honest, soft blue eyes, had the child encased in her arms.
'Mummy, come to the willow with me?' asked the child. Her voice was slightly higher than the Luna Sirius had met but nonetheless he knew it could only be her.
'Lu I need to start making dinner. I still haven't quite mastered the spell for making bolognaise... Why don't you ask your father?'
'He's gone out again. He said he was looking for,' Luna paused for a moment, with a confused look on her face 'Gernambeez?' The woman, who Sirius assumed was Luna's mother, gave a hearty laugh and simply hugged her daughter even more.
