IN THE BEGINNING, THERE WAS DARKNESS. Life always begins in the dark, with no one to watch it grow, no one to watch it struggle as it attempts to latch onto existence.

We all know this.

Without darkness, there can be no light.

Without death, there can be no life.

Without destruction, there can be no creation.

When that first seedling of a soul explodes into existence, it tends to scare the darkness away, to send it retreating from the blinding light of birth. Rarely does that new life call to the darkness, draw it in close and nurture it.

But her soul was different. It came from the darkness, was made from its hissing shadows and clawing tendrils. She was borne from destruction, and latched onto a scrap of light. That lightness in her grew over time, fighting back the dark, hiding it away in a tiny black box.

His soul was much the same, two firsts in a never-ending eternity of existence.

She calls to him, and he to her.

God help us when they find each other.
