The soul should always stand ajar, ready to welcome the ecstatic experience.
-Emily DickinsonIt was like there was a music bug somewhere in my head because no matter what I did, Miley Cyrus's wrecking ball kept on evading my thoughts.
I came in like a wrecking ball......
"Tilt your head a little."
It was probably because my hairstylist was humming it nonstop under her breath. I tilted my head slightly as Breanna, my hairstylist had told me to. From my peripheral view, I could see Laura clutching tightly to her bag of chips, obviously watching some cute baby shows on YouTube while having her nails done. She was now trusting the phone to her mom who was sitting next to her.
I heard a snipe and I swiftly turned to the mirror to see a small chunk of brown hair float to the ground. I groaned inwardly. Sonya did this. She told the hairstylist what to do. Such a pity she wasn't here to watch them chop my hair off.
I sighed as I mentally went through the guestlist for tonight's dinner in my head. Donovan and Maria Kane, Dorian's parents were the first- obviously because they were the hosts and the dinner was taking place at their mansion in the suburbs. Then there was Diana, her husband Xavier and daughter Liliana. The next was Demetria Kane and Alexa Newman, Dorian's aunt, and her son, George. Mara had drawn a comprehensive family tree for me, providing me with a little back story of each of them. I found it unnecessary to learn about some bunch of people as though I was heading for an interview but if Mara thought it was necessary, I'd better do what she says.
Donovan Kane was the soon to be retired president of Aerokane and apparently a leading man in the Aerospace industry. Maria his wife, was the head of most of the Kane's charity organizations, a UNICEF ambassador and according to media, she has a fierce passion for helping the less privileged.
Diana was Dorian's older sister, a fashion designer slowly taking over the city's fashion world and is married to popular author Xavier Costa. Demitria was a sophomore at Yale School of Drama and Alexa is Donovan's sister who is currently married to a politician, Michael Newman.
I can't flop this.
I felt Breanna cleaning me up as she spray something on my hair and I looked up at the mirror and couldn't believe the person staring back at me. Prior to my styling, I had gone through full body waxing, manicure, pedicure, skin treatment at the spa, and a nice time in a sauna with Laura and her mom, Michelle who just arrived from Montreal.
"These chips are going to grow in your belly one of these days," I heard Michelle mutter as soon as we finished. She was referring to her daughter's ravenous appetite for salted chips. I sniggered.
"Mom, it's the cravings," Laura pouted and I snorted.
"I can imagine why," I said and we all giggled. It could be the cravings but Laura always had a thing for chips, maybe a little more now that she was pregnant.
We made our way out of the shop to where Theo was. He had waited for us all through our session, a strict order from Dorian. I smiled at him when he noticed us coming. I still get a little weird when he tries to open the door for me so he just helped Michelle with into the car and I got into the passenger seat.
"I can't wait to see your new apartment, Kota," Laura squeaked with excitement as she was settled in the car and gave a small smile. Yes, my new apartment. Sometimes I forgot about it myself. It was only going to be temporary until, after the wedding, Dorian and I would obviously have to move in together.
After last week's encounter with the car tailing us, Dorian suggested I changed location and voila, look at me now. So now, I was in an upscale neighborhood with Theo always available to take me wherever I wished. Sometimes I feel Theo was more of a bodyguard than a chauffeur. It was a high possibility with his well-built frame but I never ask.
