Chapter 5: Waffle House & Girl Talk

I was waiting in the alley for Katie to go. Flash was fired up and hot headed. He was dancing around as I held onto his bridle. "Next event, barrel racing." The announcer boomed over the loud speaker... 13 horses ran and we heard "Number 14 Katie Clark on Flashing Fire."

She was ready, she looked down at me, "You got this!" I gave her a big smile. I walked a now very hot Flash closer to the alley, him almost trampling me. I felt like I was walking a thoroughbred onto the track. I stepped back a little and released the beast. They took off as I ran to watch.

Tight around every barrel, flawless. "And that is a time of 15.45 second, putting Katie in the lead." I reached the two and threw up a hand for a high five. "Heck yeah that's how you do it!" She smiled, out of breath. I handed her a water bottle and waited for pole bending.

Katie came out pulling a solid 22 seconds in pole bending, coming in second. And 9 seconds in goat tying, in first place. We tied flash at the trailer and went back into the arena. We missed calf roping, but made it in time for team roping. Katie's boyfriend, Justin Summers and Austin are in a team. A small black steer broke out of the chute. Austin as header and Justin as heeler, they pulled off 9 seconds.

Next, bull riding. I saw Austin in the chute, and I got nervous. Bull riding always made me nervous, no matter who was in the chute. But this made me extra nervous because this was my new friend on a bucking bull. I started chewing my nails, a nervous habit of mine. It opened and i started counting the seconds. 1..2..3.....7..8! I jumped up and screamed with Katie. I was happy for him.

After the whole rodeo was over I checked the time. 9:48 pm. The four of us decided to go get something to eat. I decided I would drive because my truck wasn't hooked up to a trailer. I stopped by the barn to check on Cash and tell him good night.

By then it was 10:30 and the only place open was waffle house. We got a booth and Katie sat with Justin. Austin scooted in next to me. This was as close as we have been all day...

We all ordered and ate. I started to pay for everyone's meal before Austin shoved my hand back. "No, I got it, after all you were my good luck charm tonight." I smiled and felt a slight heat rise from my cheeks. I looked down so he didn't see and put the money back into my wallet. I felt my phone buzz in my back pocket and took it out.

From: Katie Clark, 10:57 pm. "Oh.my.god!!!!! Your totally blushing!!"

To: Katie Clark, 10:58 pm. "Shut up!!! By the way I'm staying with you tonight."

From: Katie Clark, 11:00 pm. "Alright, you know what this means... Girl talk!"
