First-year

Marlene and Lily walked out of their last Transfiguration class before exams. Marlene was trying to reassure her best friend, that she met earlier that year, she would do fine on the exams. In fact, she would get first in every subject.

"Marls, I am not going to get first in everything!" Marlene raised her eyebrows at her visibly distressed friend.

"Then what aren't you going to get first in?"

"Transfig," Lily answered without missing a beat.

"And who's going to get a higher grade than you?"

"That Potter boy."

...
Second-year

"Lily got detention!" Her friends giggled and she rolled my eyes. "And you wanna know why Ali?"

"Why Marls?"

"Because she hexed the Potter boy!" This produced enough laughter the entire castle could probably hear them.

"I'll see you guys later then I guess." Lily huffed and exited the dorm not regretting the fact she hexed him.

Third-year

"Alright Evans?" Lily looked up to see the Potter boy smirking at her.

"I was until you started talking to me." He looked hurt for a moment before he smirked once again.

"Merlin, Evans the amount you hate me astonishes me."

"I don't hate you. I strongly dislike you sometimes. It shouldn't surprise you either! Just this morning you threw a dungbomb into my cauldron."

"That was Sirius's idea!"

...
Fourth-year

"I saw you talking to him today." Lily was perplexed. She lifted her gaze from the book she had been studying.

"What do you mean, Sev?" She studied his face, but gave up because it showed no emotion. He never showed any emotion, except hate towards people he didn't like.

"That Potter boy! You were talking to him!" Potter had always been a topic they didn't discuss.

"Do you control who I talk to now?" Lily shot back hotly, this seemed to take Severus by surprise.

"No I just wanted to warn you."

"About what?"

"That Potter boy fancies you."

...
Fifth-year

"It's all Potter's fault! I wouldn't have said it if he hadn't humiliated me!" Lily looked up at who had once been her best friend.

"You say it to all the other muggle-borns. Don't deny it. Why am I different?" She waited for an answer that she knew wouldn't come. "Forget it I'm done here." Lily turned her back on him and whispered the password to the portrait so he couldn't get in.

"Lily! Lily c'mon!"

...
Sixth-year

Lily knew that he had changed, but this much? She was watching James help lost first-years to their classes. He wasn't even taking advantage of the situation. He didn't prank them or take them the wrong way. Lily watched for a moment longer before she approached the Potter boy.

"Hey Evans! Moons wanted me, to tell you, that he had to miss patrols tonight."

"Alright thanks for telling me." He nodded and they walked our separate ways. Lily Evans had yet to figure out that Potter boy.

...
Seventh-year

Why the fuck now? Really Lily you have the worst timing! Lily was deducting a heated debate in her head when she knocked into something causing her to fall face first into the stone floor. Then, she started hysterically laughing.

"Are you okay?" Lily looked up to see Sirius and Remus with her books in their hands. "Moony, I think see hit her head a little too hard." She scoffed and stood up.

"I'm fine really."

"Then why were you staring at James?" Her eyes widened.

"W-what?" They chuckled and slung their arms around my shoulders.

"You like him!" Lily's cheeks heated up.

Fuck, I like the Potter boy! And now they know.

...

Lily couldn't believe she was here. She was really walking down the aisle to marry the love of her life. She would make sure to tell their love story to their kids one day, but first they needed to get through the war. With James by her side she had hope. Hope was all she needed right now.

Once upon a time people would tell you the Evans girl hated that Potter boy. But just as she told him in third year,

Nah, she didn't.
