They had wasted too much time, but it was necessary. Part two of her plan was complete. The highway was empty, and Sam sped back into town. Silence stretched on as Sam wound her way into the heart of town and found a place to park. Her nerves were ten times worse than at the vet clinic and she had to grip the steering wheel to keep from shaking uncontrollably. If Aidan noticed, he said nothing. He had become a statue in the passenger's seat.
Sam's heart pounded away, but Aidan didn't comment on it, despite definitely being able to hear it. She wanted nothing more than to turn around and finish the conversation with Ada, but now was not the time. They had urgent business to take care of.
It was well after midnight, and Sam's nerves peaked. What if this didn't work? What if she gave him the wrong dose and it didn't sedate him? What if it killed him? Did the shot have to be accurate? In a vein, muscle? And worse, if she did kill him, would Aidan ever forgive her?
"Are you okay?" asked Aidan in a hushed voice.
Sam blinked, taking in her white knuckles and the green light ahead. She cleared her throat and continued to drive. No, she wasn't okay.
"I'm fine ... but I need to know something."
From the corner of her eye, she saw him turn to face her. "Go on."
"Why is it that whenever I try to talk about anything related to what we can do, I can't talk, or type?"
Stillness crept into the car. "What?"
"Well, earlier when Ada and I were upstairs I tried to tell her ... um, something personal, and as soon as I intended to bring up anything wolf related, I just clammed up. Couldn't form words. I couldn't even type."
Aidan didn't speak. Sam went along with it, but the longer it stretched, the more nervous she became. She glanced at him a few times, but he seemed to have shut down. His eyes were fixed past her and his brow pinched.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
"Yeah, sorry. I don't know."
He's lying.
Sam started, and forced her attention to making the turn and parking. Where the thought came from, she had no idea. It had been so sudden she couldn't be sure what made her even think that, but there it was, her bastard thought, polluting her focus.
"What aren't you telling me?" she probed.
"Nothing." He then got out and shut the door on the conversation.
Sam got out, too, and frowned over the roof. "I don't believe you."
He just shrugged. "Come on, we're behind schedule."
"Hold on," she implored, gripping his sleeve so he would stop walking. "Can we go over it again?"
"He's not around, but let's be quick. We split up and find a fresh trail. Howl if you find it. Once we find him we've got to keep him moving, tire him out. Remember, he's faster than you are, so stick to crowded spaces like the woods." He paused and surveyed again. "When he tries to go back to town, we ambush him with the anesthetic."
"How do we know when to shift back?"
He hummed softly. "Noah is going to get tired of being toyed with, and then he'll do one of two things: either he'll lose us and cut his losses, or he'll get a blood-lust. If it comes to the latter, you need to get away and into position, and I'll meet up with you within the hour."
The tension had left him somewhat, and she dropped his sleeve. "Are you sure you want to do this?"
"What other choice do I have?" His tone was heavy with defeat. "I've tried everything, but he doesn't want to be saved."
