"I hate this stupid thing," muttered Frank as the chain from his necklace got stuck on his lip ring.  Again.

"Yeah well you probably shouldn't chew on it then," replied Gerard, looking up from his comic book momentarily to watch Frank struggle to free the chain from his lip.

"Shut up." Said Frank.  Once he unhooked the chain, he fumbled with the pendant on the end.  A small crescent moon sat between his fingers.  It would have been pretty, -if it wasn't from the government

Gerard was the only other person who had seen franks pendant.  They had showed each other what they got as soon as they both turned 16.  Gerard turned sixteen in april so Frank saw his before he got his own in october. When his birthday came around, Frank prayed that he would get the same flat silver circle that Gerard had.  But, when Frank opened the box and saw a small crescent moon, his heart broke.  They weren't soulmates.

Frank was definitely heartbroken when he realized that him and Gerard weren't soulmates, but It was Jamia's birthday that made him realize that the system was messed up.  She had a big party on her sixteenth, and showed her necklace to everyone as soon as she got it.  On the end of the chain was the same moon that Frank had.

For a while Frank convinced himself that he wasn't actually in love with gerard, and his soulmate would end up being someone else.  But Jamia?

Frank.

Liked.

Guys.

He was sure of it.  He had never felt an ounce of attraction to a female.

That day he realized the government was either one of two things.  Completely idiotic or severely homophobic.  Honestly, they were probably both.  Frank always noticed the lack of gay couples in society ever since the 'soulmate act' was passed, but he didn't think much of it.  Slowly he started to realize the flaws in the system.  The fact that no matter what is on your 'record', there are still things that the government doesn't know about you.  You cant possibly match people up just by the information that they write down on a three and a half page form.  Plus, what about all the kids that are secretly Gay?  The government cannot account for kids in the closet.  So they're stuck with a soulmate they cant possibly love.

Frank tucked his necklace back into his grey hoodie.  Most people left their's in the open, but Frank's was always under his shirt.

"Gee?" muttered Frank

"hmm?" Gerard hummed in response.

"Do you believe in the soulmate system."

"Well," he set his comic book down on his lap, "I used to think it was corny, but then I found my soulmate, and now it all makes sense." he sighed.

"You what?" Frank replied.

"I... found my soulmate?"

"And you werent gonna tell me?" Frank Spat.

"I was gonna tell you, I just didn't know how..." Gerard muttered.

Frank cooled himself down.  He couldn't tell what he was more hurt by;  that Gerard didn't tell him sooner, or the fact that this meant that Gerard believed in the soulmate system.  "tell me about her."

"I bumped into her in the hallway yesterday.  Her name's Lindsey. She's an art student, and I think she plays bass.  Well, I actually don't know much about her." Gerard said.

"Course you don't," Frank scoffed.

"Frank, i'm gonna learn more about her." Gerard replied, now slightly annoyed.

"Dude, what if she's a mass murdered, what if she hates puppies, what if... w-what if..." Frank stuttered.

"What if what?" Gerard questioned.

"What if she's a lesbian!" Frank yelled.

"Frank, they wouldn't have matched us up if she was a lesbian!" Gerard replied

"You don't know that!  The matchmakers don't know everything!  How could they just know everything!  Its a hoax, Gerard!  They're tricking us to fall in love with people we barely know!"

"Why would they do that?" Gerard stood up.

"I don't know, to brainwash us?  To help the economy?  To convert every kid who's still in the closet because the government if full of a b-bunch of homopho..." Franks words got lost behind tears.  He was now on the floor, kneeling, crying.  He didn't wan't to lose gerard to some girl that he was brainwashed to fall in love with.  And he didn't want anyone else to be a victim of the governments homophobic tendencies.

"Frankie..." Gerard rushed over to Franks side.

"Gerard I... I know who my soulmate is," Frank took his hands off his face and looked at Gerard.

"Who is it?" Gerard's face tensed.

"Its Jamia,"

"Frankie that's great!  She's perfect for you!  She likes punk rock and she skateboards like you and-"

"Gee I'm Gay."

Gerard's face fell.  "Oh.  I see."

"Now do you get why I hate this thing?!" Frank pulled the chain from under his shirt, tears forming again in the corners of his eyes, "this stupid thing is like a cage, alright?  And now if I don't do anything then i'll either be stuck with someone I don't love, or Jamia's never gonna find her soulmate."

Gerard wrapped his hand around the crescent moon on Franks neck.  With one small tug, the chain broke off into his hands.  Then, Gerard grabbed the small silver circle around his own neck, and broke it off.  Now in Gerards hands were two broken necklaces.

"Gee..."

"Frank I have a plan.  I'll talk to Lindsey and see if she'll take your moon charm.  Then Jamia can have a soulmate."

"Buts, Does Lindsey even like girls?  And... what about you?" Frank asked.

"Well, when I was trying to find out more about Lindsey, I heard that she dated a few girls sophomore year.  So, I think she'll be ok.  And for me, well, I have you," Gerard smiled.

"Wait wha-" Quicker than lightning, Gerard's lips were on Franks.  Frank was stunned. This was what he always dreamed of.  Gerard loved him back.

When Gerard pulled away, Frank put his head on his shoulder.  He took Gerards hand and they sat in comfortable silence for a few moments.

"Can I see the necklaces?" Frank asked.  Gerard handed the mismatching broken chains to Frank.  Frank studied them for a moment,  eyeing the cheap metal.  Then, he slipped the small flat circle into the center of the moon charm.  They somehow fit together perfectly, like two pieces of a puzzle.

"Huh, thats funny," chuckled Gerard, "I guess we really are soulmates,"

"Don't even say that," scoffed Frank, followed by a small giggle.

"You're right.  Soulmates don't exist." Gerard turned to face Frank, "but real love does."

"Yeah," Frank sighed, smiling. "the government doesn't know anything about real love."
