I took a few deep breaths and calmed myself down. My whole life had been a wild ride since I had gotten here. I couldn't catch a break.
I didn't want to be confined in this room though, I needed to find Dimitri. I had a feeling he was in trouble. I walked to the door and turned the handle, to my surprise it was unlocked. Maybe Enid had done that on purpose.
I stepped out, looking for anyone who might see me. There was no one. I walked down the now familiar hallway, seeing where it would take me.
I reached a room full of tables and computers, most of them were on. Walking inside, I noticed a side room that seemed to have even more computers. Taking a better look I realized someone was sitting at one.
My heart instantly raced and I turned around, being as quiet as possible. Before I could leave I heard a familiar voice call out my name, "Iris, what the fuck are you doing?"
It was Dimitri. I looked at him for a second, he stood up and crossed his arms, waiting for an answer.
"I wasn't running away, I just wanted to see the place. I was just exploring."
"I have a feeling that's not true," he raised an eyebrow and stared straight into my eyes.
"Okay, well I was looking for you. But don't get the wrong idea. I was just making sure you were okay."
"Mhm. Very believable. Anyways, why wouldn't I be okay?"
"I'm not sure, I just had a feeling," I was embarrassed now, he was perfectly fine.
"I'm alright, but I'm not supposed to be talking to you anymore. If they found out you were here I'd be dead."
"What? That's ridiculous, why? We weren't doing anything," that made me upset, there was no harm done. We only watched a movie.
"They don't want anything to go further. It's fair, I'm not saying I like it, but it has to happen," he shrugged his shoulders.
"I'm still taking to you. I don't care what they say."
"You aren't. Sorry, but it's not happening," he shook his head and sat back down.
"Well at least answer this," I said.
He raised an eyebrow, "Hmm?"
"Am I really a burden to you? Because one second I think you're a genuine person who's worth talking to, and the next you can't stand me. I just need to know which it is."
"Iris you've never been a burden to me and you never will. I was mad and I said some regrettable shit. You're not a burden though, I promise," he looked down for a few seconds and then raised his head. His eyes met mine, "I need to tell you something."
I got anxious, I didn't know what would come next.
He pursed his lips, "Iris they're moving me to a different group. I won't be in this one anymore. I move out next week."
What? No. That couldn't be true. Tears began to well up in my eyes. This wasn't fair. We had just started to get close. I didn't know the next time I'd be able to talk to him. I never thought I'd miss Dimitri like I did. He wasn't even gone yet.
"No, Dimitri please no. Ask them if there's any way you can stay, please," my voice cracked.
"Don't cry, I already feel bad enough. I don't want to leave. I tried to convince them to let me stay, there's no way I can. I'm sorry," he let out a sigh.
My heart hurt. I didn't want him to leave. Some part of me still had plans for us. He still had to teach me how to properly hack. We still had jokes to make. There wasn't enough time in a week.
Tears streamed down my cheeks, I couldn't hold them back anymore.
"I don't want you to go," my vision was blurry and I rubbed my eye to see a bit better.
Dimitri stood up and walked towards me. He put his arms around me and held my head to his chest.
"I'm sorry Iris, I have to. I don't have a choice," there was a pain in his voice that you could only notice if you paid attention like I did.
He let go of me and looked at the ground, we stayed in a comfortable silence for awhile, "I'm really sorry Iris. I never wanted any of this to happen."
I stayed quiet. I had nothing to say. He was the one person I felt truly comfortable with here, and he would be gone before I knew it.
