"I mean it's obvious, right? I mean a family heirloom, that's the perfect place to hide a message, he had to have known it would get back to me right?" The boy said, desperately looking for a reason to believe his dad was alive and okay.

Seeing John B like this broke my heart. I mean I loved his dad too, he was like a second father to me, and I understand why he's like this, but it's devastating. I was like him for the first month or so, not wanting to believe he's dead, but at some point, I just lost hope.

"Yeah, it's possible," Kie said, from her place in the front seat.

"It could also be possible your concocting wild theories to help deal with... you know"

"Pope"

"Deal with your sad feels," Pope said, finishing his sentence.

"Bro you know how I process my sad feels. Dank nugs and the stickiest of ickys that's how I do." JJ said. I laughed at the idiot sitting beside me, before putting my head on his shoulder.

"I'm not concocting, my dad's trying to give me a secret message."

"If it helps you believe John B-" Kie started. "Look I don't need a therapy session okay, I'm not tripping out."

"It's okay to trip bro-" JJ started, also getting interrupted. "Look my dad is missing. Missing. You don't know what it's like having the person closest to you vanish and then have no idea what happened, just wake up every morning wondering." JB said. "False accusation," I mumbled under my breath, JJ giving me a sympathetic look. "It's been almost a year," Kie said. "Look he might have gotten kidnapped, that's an option," I said, trying to lighten the mood at least a little. "He could be in a soviet sub being interrogated by the KGB somewhere," Pope added. "Absolutely, or Atlantis," JJ said. "JJ. Look what do you think the message is?" Kie asked, diverting her attention back to him. "Redfield. Redfield lighthouse, my dad's favorite place." JB said as we drove by the sign.

Big John used to take me John B, and JJ here all the time.

We all climbed out of the van and looked at the lighthouse. "Look this is what's gonna happen. You are gonna post up and look for bogies." JB said to me and JJ. "understandable." I said, since me and goldilocks are the two most chaotic people in the group. "wait, why us" JJ asked. "Because you're not coming," Pope said. "Why?" Blondie asked, "Look JJ there are independent, and dependant variables. You are an independent variable." Pope said, I moved out from in between them, knowing JJ was about to get heated. "Shut up Pope, just shut up!" JJ yelled. "Just listen!" JB yelled. "Pope you stay here and look out with JJ and Layne, okay? If we get split up we meet back at JJ's house." John B said to us. "Great" Kie said.

John B and Kie walked off, and Pope said "I'm gonna work on my Merit Scholarship essay, and I'm trying to keep felonies to a minimum." He said. "Would you just shut up already?" JJ said, kicking a hacky sack. I went and sat down next to Pope, leaning against his arm. "So like what is this scholarship exactly?" I asked him, tearing apart a leaf. "Basically if I do everything right and don't get arrested, and they like me, I get a full-ride scholarship, and it would make life like really easy." He said. "Hmm," I replied. "Have fun," I said, getting up knowing if I talked too much he would yell at me.

I ran and jumped on JJ, knocking both of us over. "And why exactly was that necessary?" JJ asked, rolling onto his back. "Sometimes you just gotta fall over in life," I replied, making us both laugh. I looked up to the lighthouse and saw Kie, JB, and some creepy old guy. JJ jumped up from next to me, and I stayed put, watching the clouds. After a minute Pope got up from his spot and the boys started messing with the hacky sack. "I swear to god if either of you steps on me," I said from my spot in the grass. Just then, we heard cop cars. "shit," We all said, JJ helping me up before we got in the car. JJ drove off, and I said "Should we wait?"

"My scholarship!" Pope said. I leaned back in my seat as the lighthouse faded away.

I handed JJ back the blunt, as JB pulled up in the van. "Let's ride," JJ said, as all 3 of us got in the car. "This better be good," Pope added.

"She said she's not coming," Pope said, leaning over the rail of the wreck. "Why not?" JJ asked, raising his hand up. "What'd you do to her John B?" I asked him, leaning in between the two. "Shit. Hang on. I'll deal with it," He said before getting out of the car. We all watched as he walked into the wreck. "What did that dumbass do?" I questioned no one in particular.

After a few minutes, the brunette boy and black-haired girl walked out. "What'd he do?" I asked when she got in the car. Neither of them answered.

"Do you mind if I just relax on this one? It's been a long day and a lot of weird stuff has gone down. I'm just gonna lay low, oh you want a hit of this?" The blonde boy on the opposite side of the seat said, questioning Pope about the blunt in his hand. "Has he ever said yes?" I asked him. "I keep the signal clear," Pope said to him. "Don't you understand, your problem is that you don't get creative if you got creative then-"

"Okay so I know I was wrong about the lighthouse, and almost everything else, but I was right about one thing. My father is trying to give me a message."

I ended up falling asleep until we got to the cemetery. "JJ give me a piggyback ride," I said, getting out of the car. "Fine." He replied. "Yesss," I said, jumping on his back. I put my head on his shoulder as we walked through the cemetery. "This place is scary. John B what are we doing?" Kie questioned. "Ok so you know how you try to remember a song but you don't know who sings it? This whole time I thought Redfield was a place, but it's a person." He said, holding his lamp up to a grave.

"Voa effing la" JJ said. I jumped off his back, and stood next to him, looking up at the name. "My great-great-grandmother, Olivia Redfield. That was her maiden name." We all stood in silence, looking around. "Help me with the door," JB said. The 3 guys tried pushing it open while me and Kie stood.

"They really think they're gonna get that open?" I said to her. "They're not the brightest." She replied. All of a sudden, a moccasin slithered out from the door. We all jumped back, and out of its way. "That's a moccasin alright," JJ said. He started barking at the snake, and I started dying laughing, while everyone else tried to get him to stop. "Your gonna wake the fricken dead man!" Pope said. "Dude their afraid of dogs everyone knows that." He said. JB tried walking to the door, but Blondie stopped him. "If there's one, there's probably dozens." He said, barking into the door, me once again laughing my ass off. "Stop barking at the snakes!" John B said. "Fucking dumbass," I said, through my laughter.

"John look. We're not gonna get in there..." I stopped listening and looked at the crack in the door. "We could fit through that," I said to Kie, pointing at it. "Yeah, we could." She agreed. When Pope was done talking I said "We can get through."  "No no no, you think your gonna fit through the hole?" JB said. "Look it's about your dad, and honestly I don't believe in it, but you deserve to know the truth," Kie said.

We all pulled the vines down, and JJ leaned against the wall. "I'm gonna boost ya, I've seen it in movies several times." He said. "remind me what we're looking for?" I asked. "You'll know when you see it." John B replied. Kie went first, and I was right behind her. They handed us our flashlights, and we looked around.

"If there's a fucking cricket in here, I'm gonna lose my shit," I said to Kie, making her laugh. "You alive, like a heartbeat and everything?" John B asked. "I think so" I replied. "So far" Kie answered. "That's good."

"Hey, Layne I think I just saw a cricket go in there," JJ said. I hung my hand out of the hole, giving him the finger, hearing a laugh come from him.  "We need some more light," Kie said before John B hung his lantern in. "We looked around for a second before Kie hit me in the arm and pointed to something.

"Oh my god."
