"people cry, not because they're weak. It's because they've been strong for too long"
-Johnny Depp
Sabito sat on top of the newly slashed in half boulder, as he always did, although he sat a little more to the leftish as so to not fall through the opening. Makomo stood a few yards away, examining some flowers that were beginning to bloom when they both felt it. Sabito sharply took in a breath as the strange sensation entered his body. He felt tingly all over. He felt refreshed. He felt almost, almost- almost alive, he thought. "Sabito?" came Makomo's quiet, questioning voice.
"He did it," Sabito felt himself say. Tanjiro had done it. He'd defeated the demon. Sabito was still hurt that it couldn't have been him, that he hadn't been strong enough, that he hadn't been manly enough to kill that demon, to survive. But now, at least he got to pass on. Now he could leave, and experience his next life, his rebirth. Makomo could, too. Thank you Tanjiro. "Sabito" Makomo's gentle voice called out again. "Hm?" I'm going to leave now. I want to see what I'll be like in my next life. Although I do wish I could remember you, and Urokodaki-san, and Tanjiro, and..." She hesitated a bit. Makomo wasn't sure how Sabito would react to bringing him up. She didn't want her last act on this earth to be making Sabito unhappy. But I have to say it. I have to say it because it's true. I'm going to miss him, as well. And I already know Sabito has been missing him this whole time. She thought. "And Giyuu''.
Sabito did not react from under his fox mask. Sabito's chest didn't ache with longing. There were no tears begging to be released in Sabito's eyes. Nope. Nuh-uh. He was a man. So why did his heart still ache at the very thought of him? "Makomo," Sabito said after a moment, and was surprised when his voice came out raspy, and a little broken. "Let's leave something for Urokudaki-san, before we go." "Ah, good idea, Sabito. How about some of these flowers?" Sabito made a soft noise of assent. Carefully, they picked some of the flowers Makomo had been admiring earlier. It was a bit strange for them to do this while the eerie tingling sensation still ran through their bodies. For the first time in a long time, Sabito could almost smell the flowers, almost feel them in his hands. "I think that should be enough, Sabito" Makomo said, placing her hand gently atop Sabito's to prevent him from picking another one of the pretty blue flowers. And sabito gasped aloud at how real her hand felt. Almost warm. Almost like he could feel the blood strumming in her veins and the heart beating in her chest.
He couldn't, of course. Because she had neither. But it almost felt like she did. Makomo felt it, too. Eyes growing wide when she almost heard the sound of skin against skin, something so simple she had long forgotten. She pulled her hand away like it had been struck by lightning. She looked up at Sabito with a small, fond smile on her lips. "Let's go" she breathed out. Sabito stood up, and they started walking down the mountain.
