...Page Break...
Severus Snape and Lily Evans used to be the best of friends. They weren't like normal friends, however. They were a witch and a wizard who went to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. They were both in Seventh year, their last year at Hogwarts.
Severus had greasy black hair, a large nose, and an aura that made you fear him whilst you were in his presence. He was a Slytherin, one of great ambition and cunningness. He was a half-blood, one who had one parent as a witch or wizard, his mum, and one who had another parent who was either a muggleborn or a muggle, his father.
Lily had flaming red locks, pure emerald eyes, and a very calming demeanor. She was a Gryffindor, a Slytherin's worst enemy, full of bravery and courage.
Before Fifth year, they were the best of friends, practically inseparable, but, like all things good, it had to end. There was only one reason for it... James Potter. He had taken a liking to Lily right off the bat, and had immediately taunted Severus relentlessly. He hadn't responded well to the fact that Lily despised him and preferred Severus's company rather than his own, so one day, he hung Severus upside down. Lily had tried to come to his rescue, forcing James to put the poor boy down. Severus had retaliated to the prank by forcefully telling Lily he didn't need her help, and then he called her the worst thing possible.
He had called her a 'mudblood', meaning dirty blood. It was an extremely offensive saying, usually used by snotty purebloods towards muggleborns, referring to their non-magic heritage. It insulted their muggle parents and themselves, insinuating that they were the lowest of the low. It wasn't a term one would usually hear in a civilized conversation.
From then on, Lily had avoided him like the plague and had started dating James. Severus had tried to apologize many times, but Lily wouldn't hear any of it. Then, midway through sixth year, Severus had stopped trying to impress and apologize to Lily. This made her glad that he had finally stopped trying to pursue a lost cause, but she also felt slightly sad that he had given up on her.
Now, it was April, the second to last month of school, and Lily was tired of fighting. She didn't want the last month of school to be filled with resentment, especially since Severus had started hanging out with some questionable Slytherins. She decided that she should forgive Severus and try to be friends for the last part of the year, even if James didn't like it.
As she pondered everything that had gone on in the last seven years, she made her way down to the dungeons where the Slytherin common rooms were located. She rapped her knuckles on the portrait of Salazar Slytherin, known to be the entrance to the Slytherin dormitory. The man on the picture shielded his face.
"OW! Young lady, please stop banging on my face. It's rather unpleasant," he said.
Lily removed her hand from the painting. "Oh, sorry sir. I didn't mean to disturb you. I was wondering if anyone could retrieve Severus Snape for me, sir."
The painting thought for a moment. "Very well, young Gryffindor. Only so that you will quit that infernal banging." The man disappeared, and, not a few moments later, the painting swing outward to reveal Severus Snape.
"Evans," he greeted cooly, not letting Lily see how happy he was that she had asked for him.
Lily was greatly disturbed by Severus's tone and turned to go. "Well, if you're so displeased to see me..." She was stopped by a hand on her shoulder. She whirled around to face a very frantic Severus.
"No, Lily, that's not what I meant. I'm sorry. I'm just nervous."
Lily was confused. "Whatever for?"
Severus sighed. "Well, it's just that you haven't spoken to me since fifth year, and this is my chance to possibly make up. One wrong word will set me back on square one of the forgiveness board."
Lily frowned. "Well, I have had a reason ever since you called me-"
"DON'T say it!" Severus snapped, harsher than he intended.
"You didn't have any problem saying it two years ago!" Lily retorted.
"Lily, please! I swear I didn't mean to! If I could go back in time, I would undo it all and save us this pain, but I can't! I'm done making excuses about Potter! I just want you back! Please forgive me! I can't go on like this any longer," Severus pleaded.
Lily sighed and rushed at him, wrapping her arms around the taller boy's torso. "Neither can I," she confessed. Severus looked down at the fiery red-head, surprised, but he hugged back all the while. "We should spend some time together, just as friends."
