I stay up past my bedtime

We were pretty miserable that night.

We camped out in the woods, a hundred yards from the main road, in a marshy clearing that local teens had obviously been using for parties. The ground was littered with flattened soda cans and fast-food wrappers.

We'd taken some food and blankets from Aunty Em's, but we didn't dare light a fire to dry our damp clothes. The Furies and Medusa had provided enough excitement for one day. We didn't want to attract anything else.

We decided to sleep in shifts. I volunteered to take the first watch.

Annabeth curled up on the blankets and was snoring as soon as her head hit the ground. Grover laid against a tree trunk and was out pretty quickly as well. I looked over to see Percy staring at the night sky

"Go ahead and sleep," I told him. "I'll wake you if there's trouble."

He nodded, but still didn't close his eyes. "This is all so crazy."

"What? The bus blowing up, or the fact that you just killed medusa." I questioned with a smirk

He turned towards me, "just everything. I mean last week I thought the gods were just some ancient stories, and now there messing with our lives"

I stared back at him. "yeah...That was pretty cool what you did back there. How you mailed the head to Olympus"

"I guess," he said with a shrug. "I just wanted to show them I wasn't just a pawn in their plan, you know?"

I gave him a smile. "You should probably get some sleep." I started, "before you start coming up with any more crazy plans to get us killed"

He chuckled. "Yeah, yeah."

And with that he laid down in a small pile of leaf's and blankets and was out like light.

I was about to look away when I noticed Grover sit up.

"Grover go back to sleep. I swear I'll wake you up for the next shift"

"I know, I just- I can't let you get hurt, I can't let that happen again." Grover muttered looking down.

"Again?" I question confused "Grover I haven't got 'hurt' once the whole time I've known you"

His eyes got wide for a second, like he said something he shouldn't have, "umm-me and Annabeth were talking and we both agreed there's something strange going on with this quest. Something isn't what it seems."

"Well, duh. Me and Percy are getting blamed for stealing a thunderbolt that Hades took."

"That's not what I mean," Grover said. "The Fur—The Kindly Ones were sort of holding back. Like Mrs. Dodds at Yancy Academy... why did she wait so long to try to kill you? Then on the bus, they just weren't as aggressive as they could've been."

"One of them literally threw me across the bus"

Grover shook his head. "They were screeching at us: 'Where is it? Where?'"

"They were asking about Percy," I said.

"Maybe... but Annabeth and I, we both got the feeling they weren't asking about a person. They said 'Where is it?' They seemed to be asking about an object."

I looked up at him. "That doesn't make any sense."

"I know. But if we've misunderstood something about this quest, and we only have nine days to find the master bolt..." He looked at me like he was hoping for answers. Unfortunately I didn't have any.

I thought about what Percy had reminded me Medusa said: We were being used by the gods. What lied ahead of me was worse than petrification. "I haven't been straight with you," I told Grover. "I don't care about the stupid lightning bolt. I agreed to go to the Underworld so I could bring back Sally."
