Jake's POV

It has been officially been three months since Henry was taken and two months since me and my wife stopped talking. Well I don't know if she's even my wife anymore.

After that incident between me and her and when I went to the bar and talked to that old man I realized that I still have one thing left... Piper.

So I go to work everyday when I'm supposed to so I can provide for us and make sure we still have a home.

Like that man said I can't be a whiskey lullaby and leave her with no one. I still drink a little at night just to help me sleep, but during the day when I'm not at work or when I come home from work I'm with Piper trying to help her.

Piper has helped me a lot too. She has stayed with me in the guest room when I needed someone to hold and talk to and I do the same for her.

I don't know if Henry is even still alive, but I do know I still have one kid that I have to be there for.

It was early when I woke up from a restless night when I decided to go to Ray.

I just needed to know something. I mean even if it's bad news I still need it to help.

I slowly got up from the guest bed making sure not to wake Piper and slowly walked out and closed the door.

I walked down stairs grabbed my shoes, coat, keys and wallet and headed out. I'm happy it was my day off so I didn't have to worry about being late or even calling in.

It was still a little dark outside with the sun just starting to rise. As I was walking I noticed something out of the corner of my eye.

I stopped walking and slowly walked to see what it was. As I got closer I noticed it was pretty small.

I got just a step from it when I realized it was a small gray kitten. The kitten was curled up in a small old cardboard box sleeping.

I stood there for a moment contemplating whether or not I should help it. I finally decided that I can't just leave it out here to die.

So I slowly got on a knee and started petting the kitten awake. The kitten didn't want to wake up at first until it realized that someone was touching it.

The kitten got up and ran to a corner in the box to hide from me. So I laid my hand down flat to show I wasn't going to grab and attack it.

After about a minute I crept my hand a little closer to the kitten. The kitten started to get closer to me being a little less tense.

I decided I was just going to let the kitten come the rest of the way to show it I'm not trying to hurt it.

The kitten finally sat near my hand and sniffed. After about thirty seconds of sniffing it licked my hand.

It tickled because it was a really light lick, but I picked up my hand and started petting its head.

The kitten seemed contempt because it closed its eyes and leaned into my hand for more warmth.

I removed my hand from the box still on my knees I sat there waiting for it to come out

After a minute maybe it slowly started walking out of the box. The kitten was looking around making sure nothing else was there when I finally came and sat down right in front of me looking up at me.

All I could do was sit there and smile. So I reached down to pick up the kitten and it was surprisingly okay with it.

The kitten was calm. It didn't try to run or scratch me.
