"You're pulling my arm, right? That has to be one of the worst jokes I've ever heard."
After less than four hours of sleep all night, I am officially delirious. Which would make sense, because I'm currently getting the strangest call from Rhys Laderman.
"It's no joke," I can practically see the smirk plastered on his cocky face. "She asked me to invite you."
Rhys had just informed me that Rebecca had liked me so much that she was inviting me over. For a family dinner.
"I'm sorry, does she realise who I am?" I laugh.
"Cora Cadigan?"
"Shut up, idiot," I frown. "I meant what I am. In other words, not fucking loaded and living in your part of town."
Rhys is silent for a moment. I picture him lying on his silk-covered sheets, king-size, plush, bed, rolling his eyes.
"Mum's never been like that," he whispers. "She wasn't born rich, you know. She does have a heart."
"I just can't imagine why she would want me to come," I bite into my thumb nervously. "It's not like you and I are the best of friends."
"Look, it wasn't my idea. If you don't want to come, don't," he says curtly.
"Geez, what's up your ass?"
"Nothing," he grumbles. "Just— can you make up your mind already?"
I scoff, "I'm sorry, but what gives you the right to be an ass? It's not like you've given me much time to think it over."
"Are you busy tonight?" he says, monotone.
"No, I—"
"I'll pick you up at six," the phone line cuts dead, Rhys ending the call on his own accord.
