“There is a new kid coming? When?” The excited voice called out as hands quickly snagged the girls shoulders. Letting go at her stern look, the kid danced around her. “We never get new students here. Is it a girl? Hot? A guy, wait it’s not a human is it?” The kid rattled on.
“LAVI!” The girl yelled. The boy stopped. Long, tall and lanky with a splotch of floppy red hair covering half his face he looked at her. A huge grin split his angular handsome face in two.
The girl was nearly a foot shorter that the male teen. She stood with her hands up in a stop fashion, glaring at him. Her dark hair pulled back in twin ponytails. Wearing knee high tall boots and a short-skirted dress, she waited until the energetic teen sat down. His one good eye watching the girl.
“Sorry, Lenalee.” He muttered. The samurai looking man beside him tsked.
“As I was saying. We will have a new student starting tomorrow. He…” she glared at Lavi. “… has been recently orphaned. His adopted father died of a heart attack three days ago.” She informed the group watching her.
“We will be placing him in your class. So please be nice.” She pointed to Lavi, “be polite.” She pointed to the samurai. “And be welcoming.” She added in general to the group. Taking a deep breath, she let it out slowly. “As far as we know, he is only human.” She stated.
Lavi leapt from his seat on top of the picnic table. “I knew it!” He shouted punching a fist into the air. “Komui has been wanting to see how a human can deal with us!” He laughed. It had been a long time since he was allowed to be around humans.
“Yes.” Lenalee told him looking exasperated by the boy’s enthusiasm. “Komui is quite interested in this particular human.” She glanced around the group. Most looked very disinterested in the news. She knew she had to pick one of them as a guide for the new boy, she feared the choice she was about to make.
“Kanda.” She sighed out the name. The dark samurai turned to look at her. Blue grey eyes flashing.
“No.” he stated simply. She tossed her hands in the air.
“You're next on the list! You have to do your duty!” she yelled in exasperation.
“The stupid rabbit wants it, let him baby sit!” the dark man growled.
“Really, Lenalee I don’t mind!” Lavi cried with more excitement than she wanted. Sighing heavily, she knew it would be better for the newcomer to have Lavi.
“Komui ordered it to be Kanda. Said he needs to fulfill his duty to this school.” Turning she walked away not wanting to debate with the grumpy teen any longer.
The red-haired teen watched his classmate storm back into the building. Lenalee was the class president and worked closely with her brother Komui who was the principal of the school. He turned to glare at the dark figure sitting beside him.
“This is so not fair!” he cried. Kanda stood snorting he agreed.
“You're telling me. So just pretend your me when you introduce yourself to the human tomorrow.” The samurai turned to walk away.
“Oh, no!” Lavi rushed after him. “I am not going to get in trouble for you shirking yoqqq11ur duties again! Besides this is a direct order!”
“Stupid rabbit!” Kanda grumbled as he walked away. Lavi watched him go, a frown marring his handsome face. The red-haired teen was pulled from his musings as Daisya walked up beside him. The guy looked like a jester in his pointed hat. One of the shortest students here, many assumed he painted his face. Those who knew him knew the truth.
“You bailing him out again?” he asked.
“No.” the teen said. “it’s time he does his duty.” With that they went their separate ways. The school day was ended and Lavi wanted to get some work done before dinner.
Shuffling back to his dorm room he wondered about this ‘we think he's human’ coming to his school. A school where nothing was at it appeared. Lavi's hand feel to the railing of the stair case, it suddenly turned into a snake. He didn’t even flinch any longer, just let his hand fall back to his side. He marched along the hall to his room.
Everyone here had their own rooms. Lavi was lucky, he got a corner room. These were larger and had two windows. Most of his space was filled with books. He loved to read. He didn’t care if it was nonfiction, fanfiction or fiction, nor what genre it was. He just loved to read about human culture and how they did things without magic of his unusual set of friends around him.
Just as he was about to open his door, he heard crashing in the room across from his. The other corner room belonged to Kanda. The samurai pulled out all the stops carrying a katana sword with him everywhere he went.
“He's not too happy about his assignment, is he?” a voice drew the one-eyed teens attention. Glancing toward the stairs he saw his blind class mate Noise coming up. The man was as big as a bear, which really didn’t surprise the teen considering.
Lavi snickered. “Not at all. He's pissed I won’t bail him out either.” He grinned.
“You're going to leave a poor human to that fate?” Noise asked in disbelief. Rubbing a long-fingered hand across the back of his hair, making it stand up even more, Lavi sighed.
“You know I can’t. I will trail them, make sure the kid lives through the day.” He lowered his hand as another student came to lean against the wall across from Noise. Alma watched the lanky teen.
“I don’t think the Chief would have assigned Kanda to a human. Why do you think they are bringing a human here?” he asked. Lavi pressed his shoulder to the wall.
“You want my theory?” he asked. Alma flipped his purple and blue hair over his shoulder. Sparks flicked through it, a sign he was a little annoyed. The other teen giggled at this.
“You are the smartest one of us, so yeah.” Noise teased.
“I think they don’t know what he is. Or maybe whatever made him an orphan was due to his powers manifesting.” Lavi stated. Noise nodded his head. Alma looked unconvinced but said nothing about it.
A loud crash was heard in Kanda's room. “I really feel sorry for this kid. Who in their right mind would put a human in the path of a Jinn?” Noise asked.
“You think the trickster demon would be better?” Alma said appalled. We laughed at that. The sound happened at a quiet time in the other corner room. When we all realized this, we scattered. Lavi heard his door click shut at the same time as Kanda's anguished scream down the hall.
Carefully Lavi navigated the piles of books scattered over his floor. He made it to the desk in the far corner. Tossing his bag down beside it he scooped the books off of the chair, adding them to a stack on the desk. Deciding to work on his homework first he pulled out the first assignment.
Two hours later he was done. Lavi sat looking out the window between his bed and the desk. Feet propped up on the desk, hands clasped behind his head he let his thought wonder back to the new student. It was the middle of the semester, why was this kid starting now? He thought. Something more must be going on with him. Something that required more protection than necessary. Giving him Kanda as a guide would automatically mean that Lavi himself would tag along. The reverse would never happen.
It was only as he thought about this, that it registered with him he didn’t know the new guys name. Why would Lenalee leave that out? Why had Lavi not asked sooner? He could have googled information about this human if he knew his name! Slamming the chair back to all fours, he sat upright. Arms fell to his sides as his feet hit the floor.
They didn’t want them looking the kid up before he arrived. Did the kid know what kind of school he was coming too? He couldn’t be human. What morons would send a human here? Granted Chief Komui was a bit off his rocker but this went far beyond crazy. It was in realm of insanity.
There wasn’t much he could do about it now. His stomach rumbled. Right he had missed lunch to tutor one of the younger kids. It was almost time for dinner. Maybe if he headed down, he could find Lenalee and ask her more about the kid. Standing he stretched his tall frame, listening to his joints and muscles release their tension.
Out in the hall he found himself face to face with Kanda. “Take him tomorrow!” the man growled.
“I don’t think that is a good idea. Something Alma said earlier….” Lavi began.
“Since when do you listen to the magic freak?” Kanda grouched.
“They knew I would follow you if they assigned the kid to you.” The pair began to walk toward the stairs.
“So?”
“So, does that sound like a reasonable thing to do to a human child? Even if he was a teenager.” Lavi tucked his hands into his pockets as Kanda strolled beside him arms folded in front of his chest.
“You think something is after the kid? Or that he is dangerous?” The dark man asked.
“It has to be one or the other. Why sign a Jinn to a human knowing a trickster demon would tag along for the fun of it? The Lee’s know us too well for it to be a coincidence.”
As they descended the stairs the red-haired teen glanced at his silent companion. Deep in scowling concentration, Lavi could see that Kanda was trying to work this out.
“Yeah, I think you’re right.” His arms fell to swing loosely at his sides. “It makes no sense to send a human kid to a school for monsters,” Right Lavi always forgot that Kanda hated everyone, himself most of all.
A Jinn. The very name meant trouble. Many humans intertwined them with Genies, like they could grant wishes but the Jinn were more diabolical in nature. That isn’t always true. Kanda was a Jinn, don’t ever try to get him to grant you anything. First you would have to defeat him in a battle of his choosing, which was near impossible. Then there was the whole torment for any conceived wrong doing.
Kanda was strong, a good fighter and braver, or possible (in Lavi’s opinion) more stupid than anyone at the school. Yet he possessed the magical abilities to help or hinder a human.
Same with many of the students The Black Order School of Supernatural Beings. Or for humans, The Black Order High School. Komui Lee was the head Alchemist, headmaster and Principal of the school. His sister, Lenalee was the head of their class and class president. She was also a fairy. Wings and all, the type that humans gave the bad rap of stealing children or playing tricks on them.
Human’s were gullible. Lavi came to the Black Order due to his mischievous nature and tendency to play the long game of tricks on humans. If it hadn’t been for Komui, the trickster demon would have found himself in a very tight place. He was more than happy to agree to attend the school instead.
At the dining hall Kanda went off to eat on his own. Lenalee wasn’t around, so Lavi ate with Noise, who was a were bear, meaning he could turn into an actual bear, and Daisya, an Alien from a planet quite similar to Earth, just not in this galaxy. He was born on Earth since his ancestors crashed here over three hundred years ago.
After dinner was over with, with still no more clues as to who the new student was, Lavi went back to his room. He read between four books. When he got bored or lost interest in one, he switched. If it wasn’t for his tendency to pull pranks, Lavi would have the highest grades in the class.
It was well after two in the morning before he shut his light off to get a few hours’ sleep. Soon he would meet the new kid for himself.
