Amelia's eyes began to flutter as she felt reality clear up. Her mind was still foggy on what had happened, all she knew was that she fainted. Her beautiful eyes opened up, but quickly clamped shut when hospital lights engulfed her site. She groaned in agony as her arm swooped over her eyes, pain shooting up it. She opened her left eye and saw plenty of wires hooked up to her, giving her body blood and other fluids. She took a deep breath and slowly peeled open her other eye, finally adjusting to her surroundings. While she was looking around the dimly lit white room, she noticed her nostrils fill with the stench of bleach. It made her nose twitch and she nearly threw up, hating the potent smell of such a powerful chemical. Her ears then began to take in noises: mild chatter from the distance, footsteps on tile flooring, and a constant beeping right to her side.
She knew right then and there where she was: a hospital
Her eyes began to search for anything, or anyone, who would explain what had happened. That's when she felt her abdomen tingle, like a million tiny volts of electricity were poking at her. She looked down her gown and saw she had been wrapped up, her torso looking like that of a mummy's. She was wrapped in pristine, white bandages that had minor stains of red. It worried her because, now, everyone would know.
That's when a nurse showed up, her brown hair pulled into two ponytails.
"Ms. Amelia, glad to see that you're awake. I'm your nurse, Michelle," she smiled as she checked Amelia's vitals. After writing everything down on a clipboard, she gently rubbed Amelia's cheek, "I will get the doctor and some ice chips, ok?"
"Y-yea, ok," Amelia's voice was raspy and she coughed a tiny bit. Michelle left the room in a hurry, coming back five minutes later with Louise in tow.
"'ello, Ms. Amelia," Louise greeted as Michelle gave Amelia the ice chips, "I am Louise, your doctor. 'ow are you feeling?"
"Sore, hungry, still a little tired. What time is it?" Louise nodded as she looked through some charts.
"It is around midnight. Are you in any pain, and if so, what would you rate it on a scale of one to ten?" she bent down to look at her wrappings.
"Probably a seven, mostly my abdomen and head hurt," Louise nodded and stood up straight.
"Ok, Michelle, give her 30 milligrams of Morphine through her IV and some vegetable broth. I don't want to test solids until tomorrow," Michelle nodded and walked out of the room.
"Where is my husband?"
"I'm afraid 'e left 'ours ago. But, your brother and his soulmate are in the waiting room. Your colleagues were there, but left maybe twenty minutes ago. Would you like to see your visitors?" Amelia sighed at the thought of Arthur leaving her but nodded.
Louise left the room with a confident stride just as Michelle came back with the medicine and cup of warm broth, giving it to her and quickly taking her leave. She drank the broth slowly and put the empty cup on her side table, gently stretching out the knots in her back.
That's when very, very rapid footsteps approached her door. She didn't even have time to blink before her brother barged in the room and smothered her. He glomped onto her side and gifted her with plenty of kisses, shooting out questions like lightning.
"Mattie, slow down! I can barely understand you," she smiled as Matthew released her, taking a deep breath and cupping her head. He gently moved her head to his chest, allowing her to hear his rapid heartbeat.
"Jesus Murphy, Mel! You scared the syrup out of me!" Matthew rubbed her head, making her chuckle.
"Geez, Canada is really getting to you, huh?" Amelia joked, causing Matthew to chuckle as well. Just then, Carlos opened the door, panting as he leaned against the frame.
