"This is bullshit! Why the hell does he get special treatment all of a sudden? Why is he any different from the rest of us? I can't belie-"
I sighed as I tuned the boy out. He never could seem to hold his tongue. My eyes scanned the horizon as my horse took gentle steps towards our herd of cattle.
"Acting like some big shot-.....Hey! Are you listenin to me?" I slowly turned my head towards the boy to my left. His horse was much more clumsy than mine. The poor thing.
"Hey! Oh damn you then! You damned Navajos ain't worth a shit anyway-"
"Watch your tongue, Diisgis, before I rip it out for you." His eyes showed fear, yet his body language suggested otherwise. I had to suppress a grin. I'm not one for giving into the boy's banter, but I'll admit, watching him squirm brings me joy.
"Yeah well you think your..so...." my head swung back around to the boy to see why he had stopped speaking. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"Hey, is that someone up on top that hill just yonder there?" At hearing his words, my left hand darted to my pistol, and my head made its way to where he was suggesting.
On top the hill stood a horse, a mustang rather, and at first I didn't see any rider present. The horse then began to approach us. My horse's ears pricked in excitement. As the mustang neared, I saw a body draped over the saddle horn. Strange.
"Holy shit! Is that a dead guy?!" I quieted my partner, and made a quick dismount. I handed my reins over, then went to inspect the body. The woman to be exact.
"Is that a lady?! Oh shit they can't pin this on us can they?!" Instead of paying attention to his frantic words, I moved the girl's raven hair from her neck so I could feel her pulse. It's weak, but it's there. We gotta hurry.
"Charlie, hop down and take her horse. She's alive. Barely. We need to get her to Tunstall and fast." I ordered him.
He clumsily dismounted off of his old nag and took up all three of the horses' reins. I went to remove the girl from the saddle, but something was preventing me from doing so. Then I saw it. The rope. I quickly untied it, and the girl's limp body fell into my chest. Only then did I get to have a good look at her.
Her face and hands were bloody. She had bullet wounds in her shoulder, hip, and thigh. Now that I studied wounds, I studied her face. She looked broken, hurt even.
She was beautiful.
I snapped myself out of my trance. I carried her to my horse, and placed myself and her into the saddle. Charlie threw me my reins.
"Im going to take her back to the homestead. Bring both horses back with you." I told him.
"Yeah,..yeah okay! Just hurry Chavez." I nodded in response. My horse then spun on his heel and headed back at full speed. I hope we found her in time.
