"It was delicious, thank you Mrs. McSween." I said as I rose from my spot at the table. "You're very welcome Doc. Don't forget, Mr. Tunstall is waiting for you." "Of course." I replied. The girl, Casey I believe, rose from her chair as well.
"Doc?" I turned to her. "Yeah, what's up?" "My horse, the roan gelding, is he here? He took me here didn't he?" I smiled. "Yes I believe Chavez put him in the barn for you." "Chavez?" "One of the other boys. Here, let's walk and talk." I told her and we made our way out of the house.
We exited the house, and she studied her surroundings. "Mr. Tunstall," I pointed to the man loading the wagon, "has a soft spot for runaways, what others would consider scum. He takes them in, gives them a place to stay, and an education. In return, we work for him. We regulate any stolen property. We're the regulators."  I explained to her.
"Where are the others?" She asked. "They're out checking on our cattle at the moment, but don't worry, they'll be back before you know it. Wait, I think Dick is still here. He must be in the barn. Come on I'll show you." I urged the girl forwards.
As we were walking, I stole a glance at her. Raven black hair that reaches to her hips. Bright blue eyes, similar to what I imagine the ocean looks like. Soft facial features. I tore my gaze back to the beaten road in-front of us. My immature thoughts get ahold of me too often. I chuckled to myself.
"What's so funny?" She asked. My face turned as red as a ripe tomato. Damn you Doc. Pull yourself together. "O..oh nothin. Nothing." I sputtered out. Smooth move Scurlock. She hummed in response.
We approached the entrance of the barn and I collected myself. Dick was throwing hay to his bay mare in one of the stalls. "Hey Dick!" I called to him. He turned around to face us. "Hey Doc. Miss." He nodded his head as he greeted us. "Dick this is Casey. Casey meet-" "The names Richard. You can call me Dick." He gave a polite smile to Casey. "It's nice to meet you, Dick." She offered the same polite smile. "Likewise." He responded before adding, "Glad to see you're okay. I didn't think you were gonna make it. You were in pretty rough shape when Chavez found you." She smiled.
"I'm gonna have to meet him soon and thank him." She lightly chuckled. She added, "The horse you found me on. The gelding? Is he here?" She asked him. "Yeah he's in the barn here. Come, I'll show ya." He gestured for us to follow him.
"Doc? Doc we're ready to leave! Hop on boy." Mr Tunstall called out to me. "I'll be back." I told the pair. They nodded their heads in response. "Safe travels." Casey offered a polite smile. I nodded my head and rushed to Mr Tunstall's wagon.
"About time, boy. I haven't got all day." He scolded as he handed me his shotgun. "Ready?" He asked me.
"Ready." I responded.

Side note: I know it seems there's a romance between Doc and Casey, but I assure you that is not the case😂 I'm just portraying Doc as the gentleman he is. - Dakota🤍
