I was early to the event that day as I was the author of the book. But no one seemed to be cared of that. And that really made me angry.
“Can we start the event?”, a bald man asked Mr. Prabhu, the head of that particular publishing house.
“Navya will arrive soon, we can start after that”, he said and flashed a smile at me. I managed to light a fake smile and turned it off quickly once he turned his gaze off me.
‘Who the hell is Navya? This is my book. I was the one who wrote this. Why all this stupid people are concerned about her than me? This must be my event.’ – I thought to myself. I heard that Navya was a bestselling author of four books. She was remarkably close to Mr. Prabhu, and that might be the reason for all those dramas. A white sedan came and almost all people rushed out to welcome my unwelcome guest of that day, Navya. She was inside a big crowd, and I couldn’t witness her face. Then slowly, Mr. Prabhu showed her the way. And just like that, her beauty brought jolt all over me. She dazzled like a bright cloud and her eyes doped me with some unnamed drug and made me mad. Her white top and blue jean made me to hallucinate her as a fairy from the river of paradise. She walked up to me. “Navya, meet the author of this book Mr. Advik”, Mr. Prabhu introduced me. She shook my hand with that glittering smile of hers. When my hand touched hers, I felt the softness of her skin. The event had started, and I didn’t care about it. I threw my gaze on Navya and witnessed all her alluring things. Her sweet and rosy lips widened often when the MC mentioned her name. Her slender fingers and her attractive sharp nails never failed to grab my attention. Her silky free hair often teased me whenever I glared it. Even her long astonishing legs and her black heels looked beautiful. Her curves made me nervous, and for the first time in my life I lost control over myself, because of a girl. The MC asked Navya to talk. She walked past me to catch the microphone. I was able to catch her fruity fragrance. Her voice was powerful, and her accent was not 100 percent Indian. It was a mixture of Indian and American. My ear failed to listen what she was saying as my eyes were busy ogling her. Then finally the MC asked me to speak, and that was the moment when I regained my memory and headed to the microphone by cleaning my drool. I told whatever I wanted to share about my book to the readers and the press.
“Sir, you told that this book is a supernatural fiction. When will you write romance like Navya?”, a lean, tall, press man asked me. A loud noise of laughter struck my ears. I chuckled and I turned my gaze towards Navya, I saw her rose lips widened and she was waiting for me to answer. After locking her bright image in my eyes, I said, “Soon you can expect one”. Everyone applauded including Navya.
After the event, Navya and I found time to talk. I stood so close to her and that made me nervous but then when the conversation started to build, I felt extremely comfortable.
“You must be lucky…”, she started, “to publish your first book easily in such a big publishing house”.
“Yeah, I am fortunate”, I said and smiled. She too smiled and that made my heart to skip more than a beat. For a while we talked about ourselves. I told her that I was from Tamil Nadu, and also, I told her about my education. She too shared the location of her home place – Kolkata.
‘What the fuck? Kolkata! How can I even meet her? She is almost thousand miles away from me’ – I muttered to myself. She also told me that she had finished a degree in creative writing at United states. And then, I was able to get where her accent was from. After chit-chatting for 20 minutes or so, she bid goodbye to me and Mr. Prabhu. Before she goes, she promised me something. “I will read your story and contact you to share my comments”, she said.
“I am looking forward to that. Thank you”, I said.
“Don’t be grateful. If I don’t like your story, I will roast you with my words”, she said laughing. And again, her laugh…, damn, her laugh…, made me go crazy.
“Looking forward to anything you say”, I said with a smile. She smiled again and gently patted my shoulder and walked off.
