Sydney dropped me off at Baker's address around 9 p.m. She told me I didn't have a curfew, that I could get home at any time I wanted to, just call her if I was planning on staying out later than 12. At the time I thought it was cool, but looking back I realize how irresponsible Sydney was.
I stood outside in the yard looking up at the two story tan colored building. I was wearing some of Sydney's clothes that were a bit too big for me. But they were a lot more trendy than anything I owned. A simple white t-shirt with a dull orange slip dress over it. It was quite baggy on me, but I thought I looked nice and Sydney let me hand pick it from her closet.
I was stalling going into the house. I had never really hung out with anyone my age back home and the only parties I went to were the ones my mother threw for father's coworkers. Everyone would always be 40 plus years old. But this, this was a real party, being thrown by real teenagers.
I knocked quietly on the door, silently hoping that no one would hear I and I could just call Sydney up and tell her it was the wrong address. But before I could even knock twice the door was pulled open to revive a short blonde girl. She looked more around Sydney's age and gave me a kind smile as she welcomed me inside.
"Cute dress" She remarked as she pulled up her black tube top, closing the door behind us. I thanked her before taking in my new surroundings.
The door opened up into a small hallway like room, one side there was a large staircase and to the other an arch leading into a living room. The house was dark, all the lights had been turned out instead for the kitchen. I followed cluelessly behind the blonde as she told me everyone was in the dining room. She lead me threw the living room, then the kitchen and into the room attached to it. Like the front rooms of the house the lights were turned out and someone had set up an old radio to play hip-hop music. The music was mostly being drowned out from the loud group that were sitting and standing around a wooden table.
There had maybe been around 14 or so people there, not counting myself or the blonde woman. I smiled at the group before moving closer to the action. I spotted Julian before he noticed me and went to go say hi. He had been drinking out of a brown bottle sitting in the corner with another girl.
"Hi Julian, it's me from the supermarket" I awkwardly butted into the conversion. Julian stopped what he was saying to the other girl to turn and look at me. They sat in silence, I stood, as he drank me in with my baggy clothes.
"My names Sher" I reminded him, wanting the silence between us to stop. The girl cringed at my words before taking a long sip from her own red cup.
"I know who you are" He remarked back to me before putting his hand out for me to take. He wrapped his hand around my wrist to pull me closer to him, moving his hand to my waist.
"The girl" Julian said to the other girl as he gripped my side. I smiled down at him as my cheeks turned red. I was learning fast that I liked male attention a little too much.
"Cute" The girl replied back with a strange look on her face.
"Let's get you a drink" She said before standing up, "you look like you could need it."
Julian, her, and I made our way back into the kitchen where she began to dig around. She pulled out a bottle like Julian's before handing it to me. I said thank you, but just held the bottle. Too afraid to take a sip.
"Don't drink" Julian asked well leaning up against the island.
"Well I'm underage" I said as casually as I could. Waiting for Julian to call me a child and laugh.
"You're like what seventeen? you're pretty much legal" The girl remarked and watched me, waiting for me to take a sip.
"Yeah, like seventeen" I lied before looking down at the bottle in my hands. To make my lie more believable I threw the bottle back and took a large gulp. My throat burned and I started to cough. I could feel the burn in my nose as some of it came back up.
"Woah there" Julian said as he moved my hand with the bottle down. Both him and the girl started to laugh at me. I joined in and Julian pulled me in closer to him so we were almost hugging.
We went back into the room with all the people, there we stayed for most of the night.
Things started to get weird as the night when on and more brown bottles coated the table. Girls were dancing wildly in the thin cloud of smoke in the room. I was sat down on Julian's lap watching everything he did. How he would nod every time he smiled. He wasn't bad looking, but it felt strange to be so close to him.
I began to think about how my mother would react. Not well I imagine. I wondered if she would ship me away to dorm school like she did Sydney.
But my mind wandered away from the topic of home and back to Julian. He wasn't nearly as good looking as Col, not nearly as charming, not nearly as loving. But Julian actually seemed interest in me.
He would check up on me every once in a while, it was nice. But Julian just wasn't him.
