Lunch quickly approached as Mary Mae made her way to the cafeteria. She waited for Luka and Zach by the door to the entrance, but only Luka arrived.
"Hey Luka, where's Zach?" She asked.
"I think he's asking Mr. Stevenson a few questions, we can get food and just wait for him at the table."
Mary Mae nodded, but deep down, she felt something was wrong. She began walking to the lunch line when she bumped into a solid figure and stumbled back a little bit.
She was about to speak, assuming it was Zach, when the voice spoke.
"Mary, hey!" Gilbert stood in front of her, in all his Greek god-like glory. Her heart instantly began to race as she grinned at him.
"Hey Gilbert!" She smiled, running a hand through her hair, a habit she'd picked up from the boys.
"How was your morning?" He asked politely.
"It was good, how was yours Gil?" She asked, wondering if the nickname she'd came up with for him would be accepted.
"Mine was good too!" He said, "so what are your plans for today?"
"Just school and probably going to watch a movie with the boys tonight." She said as Gilbert walked with her to the lunch line.
"Sounds fun! Which movie?"
"That new thrasher film about the gang theory thing, I'm not sure what it's called, they've been excited to watch it all summer." Mary Mae said.
"Oh! Mega-mind 4! I've been waiting for that movie forever!" Gilbert said. Mary Mae laughed, all boys were the same. She wanted to invite him, but wasn't sure if the boys would want a stranger infiltrating their tight group.
"What about you? What plans did you have today?" Mary Mae asked, excited to be around Gilbert.
"I was just going to pick my sister up from day care after school and go to work after." Gilbert said. Mary Mae smiled, the fact that he worked and according to him, kept stellar grades throughout high school was impressive. He worked for a contracting company and his role was basically to destroy houses so that they could be redesigned. It was actually the reason behind his move to their town since he'd found someone to replace him. It certainly explained his handsome build, but also how he was able to afford their one-hundred-dollar meal the previous night. That place was pricey, she wondered if the boys had stuck around long enough to see the prices on the menu. Probably not, but she'd forgotten if they were there for the remainder of the night, distracted by Gilbert and his charm.
"Wow! Sounds eventful!" Mary Mae said as they checked their lunches out, walking together to a table.
Before they parted ways, Gilbert set his food down at a random empty table before looking up to meet Mary's emerald eyes. She smiled at him as she set her tray down too.
"I really like you Mary Mae," He said, stepping closer and placing a hand on her cheek, she leaned into his touch as her heart began to race.
"I like you too Gil." She smiled at him, hoping for another kiss. She felt as though they were the only two people in the cafeteria, then a loud noise startled them and both turned to look at Zach who was staring at them as he set his tray down loudly at their table.
"Hello!" Zach said loudly as Luka and Brian left their table to join.
"Hey Zach! I was looking for you earlier," Mary Mae mentioned.
"Yeah, I was a little busy, I'm here now though. Hey Gilbert." Zach acknowledged, his voice becoming a few octaves deeper when he said Gilbert's name.
