Chapter 14 - The Only Exception

Everyone present on that battlefield was called to report in front of the brigadier general- Gong Yoo. In a large conference room, everyone is seated except for the captains and colonel. Everyone surrendered their night vision gears as it was equipped with a video recording device and all of it was activated the moment the gear activates.

Aris had noticed that Chaeyoung acted differently as soon as they head back but he brushed it off as exhaustion. She was beside him, tending and assisting him as he was injured but never did she utter any word. She didn't even complain about sending her up the watchtower while he gets all the action.

This was a preferable situation for him but it's already unusual for her to have suddenly stopped whining about everything he asks her to do.

Somehow, his preferences have changed. He'd rather hear her complain all the time rather than being this quiet.

Suzy then replays a video taken from Aris' gear so that everyone will see what happened close to first hand and everyone gasped once again as soon as they heard the Anomaly spoke. Even the captains who weren't present at the time of the battle were all bewildered, especially after spotting the huge creature watching at the shadows.

But only Aris' eyes were looking somewhere else, looking directly at her who's looking down at her hands. Unbeknownst to him, Yoongi also is staring at her.

After hearing what truly happened a few days ago during the first exam, Yoongi was also convinced that Chaeyoung could hold the answers they were looking for.

However, like Jin, he also thought that informing the general would help them investigate this matter further. But like Aris, he also thought that informing the general could also mean harm for Chaeyoung so he went with Aris's lead to conceal the intel for themselves.

Yoongi knows how truly important Chaeyoung is to Aris. Aris is a person that follow rules by the book. But the fact that he hid this intel to Gong Yoo, Yoongi would have to follow his friend's lead and have to overrule his duty as a soldier to help a friend.

Some rules are bound to be broken anyway. Especially when it concerns the person important to you.

After 4 long hours of the reporting, they were all finally let go to get some rest.

Chaeyoung lays on her bed, knowing how impossible it will be for sleep to visit her as the events that had happened tonight replays in her head. But the more she tried to convince her self to go to sleep, the more the emotions creep. The silence of the night doesn't even help to give her solace.

And the monsters come back to life.

The light from the outside had created shadows in her room. She couldn't resist opening her eyes and make out shapes that would look like they're moving slowly as if it's trying to get out of the walls.

Suddenly, those shadows climb up the ceiling and its hand stretches out.

You cannot hide forever...

Then, thus shadow showed its horribly disfigured face, shaking and gargling as it spoke of the same words over and over again while its hand continue to stretch out.

That alone made her skin crawl and she shudders in a familiar fear she had felt way back in the past. The feelings and emotions she had hoped she would never feel again are all coming back.

"You can't hide forever!" It screamed.

Chaeyoung falls from her bed as she escapes those bloody hands reaching towards her. She screws her eyes shut tight and hold in a scream while she trembles on the floor, curled like a baby.
